Sunday Seed Thoughts: A Special Day

For some people today is just another day. Just like any other day.

For a few, it’s just another day of work. For many others, it’s a day of relaxation, recreation, or sports. And for still other people it’s a day to catch up on household chores, to mow the yard or wash the car.

However, today is a very special day for all Christians. It is a sanctified day. It is a day set apart from all other days. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: God Is.

On Friday my friend, preaching colleague, and fellow blogger, Roger Shouse posted a piece reflecting on the 1966 Time Magazine cover question “IS GOD DEAD?” I recommend you read it.

We survived the turbulence of the 1960’s unrest. In the ensuing years, we’ve experienced many more periods of civil, social, and political confusion, controversy, and crisis.

As Roger noted, during the past 55 years many people and sadly most modern churches have given up on God’s Way. Deviated from God’s work. And abandoned God’s work Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Power of Worship

“The church doesn’t need more workers; it needs more worshipers,” once quipped Howard Hendricks.

I found that quote in my “worship” folder apart from the greater context. However, I doubt that Hendricks was diminishing the importance of working for the Lord, or minimizing the role of ministry, but rather elevating and emphasizing the power of worship. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Using Time

“Daylight saving time: Only the government would believe that you could cut a foot off the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom, and have a longer blanket,” quipped one anonymous sage.

And so, the moans, groans, and debates begin over the efficacy of DST after “losing” an hour of sleep last night.

Although, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a supporter of DSL opined: “The next generation…would be better for having had this extra hour of daylight in their childhood.”

More importantly, however, is this issue: How are you spending your time? No, how are you investing your time Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Preaching in the Present Tense

“It has been well said that nobody goes to church to find out what happened to the Jebusites,” opined Warren and David Wiersbe in their fine little book, The Elements of Preaching.

The Wiersbes continue with this advice, “A sermon that lingers in the past tense is not really a sermon at all; it is either a Bible story or a lecture. We live in the present tense and we need to hear what God has to say to us today.” Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Collective, Connective Worship

“Real worship happens when your spirit responds to God,” affirmed Wilson Adams in his 2005 Florida College Lecture, The Nature of God and Man.”

“We worship daily when we pray privately, read and meditate upon the Sacred Word, sing a hymn in traffic, or praise Him openly to a friend.” However, Wilson correctly pointed out that there are “some things our Creator wants His church to do in concert.” We call this collective worship. Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Crown

The Bible is filled with powerful symbols to help us gain a better appreciation and develop a deeper insight into God’s eternal plan for our salvation.

As symbols relate to Jesus we see Him as the light of the world. The water of life. The good shepherd. The sun of righteousness. And the lamb of God.

As we assemble for worship today and specially come to communion, there are three powerful symbols that are worthy of our serious reflection when we think of Christ’s sacrifice for our sins.

We’ve already looked at two. The cup and the cross. Today, think about one that’s possibly overlooked. The crown. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Cross

The cross is the universal symbol of Christianity.

However, the cross as it’s seen in houses of worship, grave markers, and worn as pieces of jewelry, may be romanticized and glamorized in a way that detracts from its original meaning and spiritual significance.

In fact, the cross may be used to represent something contrary to the principles and precepts revealed in Scripture. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: The Cup

Symbols have been powerful means of communication throughout the ages.

In the United States, for example, the American Flag symbolizes the original 13 colonies, all 50 states, as well as freedom, patriotism, and liberty. Symbols in a similar manner identify a sports team. A political party. Or even a fast-food restaurant. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: Jan. 31-Feb. 5

Good morning from Pompano Beach, Florida.

Well, it got too cool in Temple Terrace, so we had to travel farther south for some warmer weather.

Seriously, we’re here for 10 days to worship with and preach for the brethren at the Northside church. I will be speaking tomorrow morning at both services, as well as next Sunday.  And teaching the Wednesday evening class. Continue reading
