GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 5:14-16

Matt 5.14.16

“Jacob’s Ladder,” was a 1980’s hit written by Bruce Hornsby and performed by Huey Lewis and the News. Remember them?

The song was set in Birmingham, Alabama, and married the Biblical image of Jacob’s ladder with someone who rejects a proselytizing evangelist, preferring to struggle through life one day at the time. In part the lyrics go like this. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Philippians 4:13

Philippians 4.13

One day a small boy was trying to lift a heavy rock. He strained with all his might, but he couldn’t budge it.

His father, passing by, stopped to watch his futile efforts.

Finally he said to his son: “Are you using all your strength?’

“Yes, I am!” the boy cried, exasperated. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 3:5-6

There’s an old Woody Allen movie called “Love and Death” that is set in 18th century Russia starring Allen who plays Boris, and Diane Keaton (Sonja). It’s a comedy about a neurotic soldier and his distant cousin who formulate a plot to assassinate Napoleon.

In one scene Boris is walking by Sonja’s room. He hears voices and stops to inquire. Continue reading

A father asked his Son, “If three frogs were sitting on a limb that hung over a pond, and one frog decided to jump how many frogs would be left?”

The little boy grinned and said, “That’s easy, Dad. Two.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Mark 16:15-16

Mark 16.15

Yesterday’s post, Will a Loving God Send People to Hell?” elicited a great deal of response, especially on facebook.

Apparently some people don’t believe in the Bible doctrine of Hell. Others try to side step it. One person even responded with a sexually explicit picture. I guess that was their way of objecting to the post. However, a common response was “No. you send yourself to Hell by refusing to obey God.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1John 1:8-9

Open Bible

Jerry Shirley tells a story about a King who visited a slave ship.  There was a slave galley where they chained prisoners to the oars and made them row.

The King decided to go below the deck, and talk to those who were chained to the oars. And he asked one man, “Why are you here?”

“Oh,” he said, “Sire, I don’t know why I’m here. I was in a crowd when a crime was committed and when they arrested everybody, they got me, but I’m innocent!” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: James 1:22

James 1.22

A woman rushes to see her doctor, looking very much worried and all strung out.

She rattles off, “Doc, take a look at me. When I woke up this morning, I looked at myself in the mirror and saw my hair all wiry and frazzled up, my skin was all wrinkled and pasty, my eyes were blood-shot and bugging out, and I had this corpse-like look on my face!

What’s wrong with me, Doc?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Colossians 3:23

Work Pottery

Most of you have probably shopped at a J. C. Penny store. The Founder, James Cash Penny, called his first dry goods store The Golden Rule, because he believed in that principle and intended to build his business as its philosophical cornerstone.

“I believe in adherence to the Golden Rule, faith in God and the country,” Penny said.

I don’t know Penny’s religious affiliation, but it is said that he didn’t smoke or drink, and in the early days of his stores demanded the same from his employees. He once said, “I would rather be known as a Christian than a merchant.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 2Corinthians 12:9

Grace Sufficient

A construction crew had been on the job site for about a week when one of their men was hurt and a new guy, named Jason, was hired. He was a broad-shouldered, powerful young man and a really good worker. But he was also very annoying.

Jason was always bragging that he was stronger than anyone else at the work site and he especially made fun of Ralph, one of the older workmen. Finally the old fella had enough. Continue reading
