A few years ago the Josephson Institute of Ethics surveyed 25,000 High Schools students and found 98% of the teens said it was important to be a person of good character, 90% said that being a good person is more important than being rich, and 94% said that trust and honesty are essential in business. However, their behavior didn’t match. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 90:12
I read the other day that Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has passed Bill Gates as the richest man in the United States with wealth exceeding $100 Billion.
Suppose Bezos decided to deposit $86,000 every day in your bank account. But with one stipulation. You couldn’t carry over any balance to the next day. You had to spend it, invest it or give it away. You couldn’t let it sit idle in the bank. What would you do? Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 1Thessalonians 5:18
Matthew Henry was a well-known British Bible scholar and Preacher who lived from 1662 to 1714. His commentaries on the Old and New Testaments are still in print today.
One day, Dr. Henry was riding his horse on the way to a church meeting where he was the guest speaker. As he journeyed through the dense forest, a masked bandit suddenly appeared with a gun. He demanded that Henry dismount and hand over all of his money. Fearing for his life, he quickly complied as the robber returned into the woods. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 18:6
When tragedy strikes Americans from diverse backgrounds, opposing political views and various religious beliefs seem to come together. Even if it’s for a short period of time.
Yet on Sunday morning when a deranged gunman opened fire in a place of worship in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 26 people and wounding 20 others, there has been an attitude of indignation directed toward people of faith.
While well-intentioned people expressed their “thoughts and prayers” for the community and the victims of Sutherland Springs, Twitter and other social media exploded with derisive comments. A few examples. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 51:1-2
Kent and Barbara Hughes, in their book on ministry, tell of a gifted young preacher who had experienced an overwhelming failure in his ministry.
He borrowed a pickup truck and wheeled in the church parking lot. Everyone watched as he backed across the church lawn to his study door. Refusing any assistance from the members and without any comments, he began emptying his office upon the truck bed. First, he emptied the content of his desk draws. Then His files. And finally his books. “He tossed them carelessly into a heap, many of them flopping askew like slain birds.” Continue reading

Phillips Brooks the 19th century New England Preacher, author and writer of the song “O Little Town of Bethlehem, was noted for his poise, patience, and dignified deportment.
Brooks, however, suffered moments of frustration and irritability in his ministry. One day a friend saw him feverishly pacing the floor like a caged lion. “What’s the trouble, Mr. Brooks?” he asked.
His response was classic. Continue reading

An Indiana preacher, Fred Sigle, tells an incredible story that occurred in the lower east side of NYC several years ago.
Two teenagers with a long history of crime and delinquency robbed a YMCA and as they were leaving saw a young man at the telephone switchboard. They were frightened and assumed that he must be calling the police. They seized and beat him savagely with brass knuckles and a blackjack. Thinking that he was dead, they hid him behind a radiator near the swimming pool and escaped. Continue reading

Several years ago Time Magazine featured a story about the British actor Peter Sellers, who was famous for his role as the bumbling Chief Inspector Clouseau in the Pink Panther movies.
Once Sellers appeared on the Muppet Show and was being interviewed by Kermit The Frog. As the interview began, Kermit said to Sellers, “Now, just relax and be yourself.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 1:1-2
There’s a 1970’s song, “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya,” released by the late Wilson Pickett, and later performed and recorded by a number of pop and country artists. The opening lines go like this.
Girl, try to remember when we didn’t have no shoes
We stuck together, just me and you
It took a long time to get what we got today
Now you wanna give it all up for another guy Continue reading

Several years ago American Family Publishers was sending out sweepstakes notices trying to sell magazines. Their mailing list included the Bushnell Assembly of God in Bushnell, Florida. The computer twisted the name and sent them a notice addressed to “God of Bushnell.” Continue reading
