GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Romans 5:8

Romans 5.8

Tony Campolo tells the true story of two men who were traveling together on a train in London. Twenty minutes into their journey, one of the men suffered a seizure, stiffening and falling to the floor.

When this happened his friend immediately took off his own jacket, rolled it up, and put it behind the stricken man’s head. When the seizure was over, his friend lifted him back into the seat and cared for him. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Ephesians 3:20

Eph 3.20

I’m not a golfer. But I know that one of the greatest golfers of all time was Arnold Palmer. During his career he won 92 times, including 4 Master’s tournaments. He was PGA player of the year in 1960 and 1962. And Athlete of the Decade in the 1960’s. For years he endeared himself to his many loyal fans called “Arnie’s Army”

I recently read a story that during his heyday Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The King was so impressed with Palmer as a person and an athlete than he proposed to give him a gift.

“That really isn’t necessary, Your Highness.” Arnold demurred. “I’m honored to have been invited.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Jeremiah 20:9

Jeremiah 20.9

While returning to the office from lunch yesterday, Justin Berss, my summer preaching intern, and I were discussing some of our favorite Bible verses.

Justin opined that it’s hard to select just one. But when we returned to the church building, he hollered from the adjoining office, I know what my favorite verse is!

“What?”

“Jeremiah 20:9”

“What does it say?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 6:34

worry2

During the war between two city-states in ancient Greece, a spy was captured and sentenced to death. Before the execution he requested an audience with the King.

The interview was granted, and the condemned man stood before the Ruler and begged “O great king, if you do not execute me, but instead allow me to live a mere two years longer, I will teach your favorite horse to sing.”

The king thought “What’s two years? I can always kill him later.” So he agreed, and the spy was spared. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Ephesians 4:32

 Ephesians

“The year was 1942; the world was at war. The state of Florida was still in a depression. And 50 cents was a lot of money in those days,” recalls Marilyn Irlbacher.

Little Marilyn was only 8 years old at the time, living in a less than desirable foster care home. And she owed her school 50 cents for some lost books. Unless she paid the fine, Marilyn wouldn’t get her report card.

After hearing this worrisome news, Marilyn ran from the school house in tears. She didn’t have any money. And the very thought of asking her foster parents for the money terrified her. As she ran down the street, she didn’t see the tall man in her path until she ran into him.

“Here’s the rest of the story” In her own words. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 1:14

john 1.14

This week I am participating in the 36th annual Southside lectures in Pasadena, Texas.  It is a wonderful experience and great joy to be with these brethren and to hear powerful lessons by my preaching comrades.  Each brings their own unique style, insights and experience to their assigned lessons.

Yesterday morning my friend, Kenny Moorer, spoke on one of the most profound themes in the  Bible, ‘The Word was Made Flesh”, and presented it in a simple, easy to understand fashion.  This doctrine is found in one of the great Bible verses, John 1:14 Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1Corinthians 16:13

Stand Firm

Tolerance has become the new virtue in America today.

We are told not to criticize anything, not to condemn anyone, and to accept everything no matter how bizarre  the behavior may be. Ironically, as a result, people of faith are not to be tolerated for their Bible-based moral beliefs. In fact, recently a national political candidate opined, “Deep-seated cultural codes, religious beliefs and structural biases have to be changed.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Romans 6:23

Romans 6.23

File this under “America’s Dumbest Criminals.”

A man walked into a convenience store with the intention of robbing it. He gave the clerk a $10.00 bill to get her to open the cash register. It worked.

With a hand in his pocket, pretending to have a gun, he demanded that the cashier give him the contents of the drawer. And she did. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 14:12

Bible.Proverbs

Yesterday our post,Cherry Picking” The Scripture, was in response to a question asked by Stephen, one of our regular readers. Today we continue answering more of his questisons.

Stephen asks, “In trying to understand God’s Will on so many social (not so much individual responsibility) issues, how do you know who’s right and who’s wrong?”

Our questioner further opines, “If we go into a more liberal Church (such as a Methodist), what is taught, practiced, and what people believe is much different than more conservative Churches (such as Southern Baptist or Church of Christ).”

“Differences in opinion have always existed in the Church — isn’t a key question how not to make these differences so divisive as to split Christians apart?” Continue reading
