POST ELECTION THOUGHTS: It’s Not About Red States or Blue States

(We are continuing to reblog the top posts of 2012 during the holiday break.  This one ranked #4.  As someone who is growing weary of the constant political bickering, the challenge issued here is a good reminder.  Share this post with your friends)

Tuesday night I was excited to watch the election returns.  I tuned-in early to hear the optimistic predictions.  I was feeling confident that real change was coming. Perhaps I’ve been in denial.  Drinking the “kool aid” that has been in abundant supply. In my stricken state of mind I even filled out a prediction map calling for a big upset victory!  Even when things were not looking so good, I was convinced the Karl Rove was right! All would end well. Continue reading

“I’m Not Perfect”

Have you seen former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on his media tour promoting his new book?  “Total Recall: My Unbelievable True Life Storyis mainly about his success as a world-champion bodybuilder, a Hollywood box-office heavyweight, and two-term Governor of California.

One chapter, called “The Secret,” is devoted to his affair with their housekeeper that produced an out-of-wedlock son, who was five years old when he ran for govenor. Continue reading

Whose Values?

As I stood in line today at a Kansas City Chick-fil-A, I thought about Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s criticism of Dan Cathy and the fast food chain’s values “are not Chicago values.”  It took about 25 minutes to get inside the store.  And maybe another 10-15 to get my food.  So, I had time to observe.  Here’s what I saw. Is the Younger Generation Wiser?

On Sunday’s commentary page of the Kansas City Star, Mary Sanchez has a column entitled “In time, view on same-sex marriage will shift.”  In the article she weighs in on the recent controversy caused by Chick-fil-A CEO, Dan Cathy, regarding traditional marriage.  But the thrust of her observations center around the reaction, attitude and values of college age young people.  She closes her article by saying  “But it’s a younger, wiser generation that will lead.”  My question is where will they lead us? Sex. Society. And the Secret Service.

“Prostitution scandal ricochets through Washington”

This was Tuesday’s headline from many newspapers and internet news sources.

By now, I’m sure you’ve read or heard about the eleven Secret Service agents and ten military personnel who were sent to Cartagena, Columbia, to protect the President and were caught with twenty-one women in their hotel. Continue reading

Christians and Pop Culture

In a Washington Post article, February 23, 2012, about the recent abortion debate in Virginia, the Post reported how lawmakers had been ridiculed and lampooned on “Saturday Night Live” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” The article quoted Steve Jarding, a professor at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government and a Democratic consultant who has run campaigns in Virginia. He made a very telling statement that speaks to the mentality of the masses today when he said, “You never want to get on the wrong side of popular culture. When people are laughing at you, you know you’ve gone too far.” Continue reading

President’s Day Reflections: What Substitute for a Religious Society?

This from CNSNews.com as I write my blog on this President’s day, February 20, 2012

Shaun Casey, the religious affairs adviser to presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008, said at a discussion on Tuesday about “God and Politics” that the demise of religious society in the United States is a good thing.

“I, frankly, am glad American civil religion is dying,” said Casey, who is an associate professor of Christian Ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. Continue reading
