Worship is Fundamental

A little boy asked his father what was the highest number he had ever counted to.

“Well, I don’t know,” his Dad replied, “ I never thought about it.”

Wondering why he asked, his Dad inquired, “What’s the highest number you ever counted to?”

Without hesitation he responded, “973. “

”Well, why did you stop there?” his dad asked. Continue reading

Coffee. Concerts. And Church.

“I believe it is unbiblical to elevate entertainment over preaching and to put public relations ahead of worship in our church services,” wrote John MacArthur in his book “Ashamed of the Gospel” and subtitled “When the Church Becomes Like the World.”

MacArthur’s book was orbitally published in 1993 and has been updated twice. He further warns against fleshly enticements, secular methods, and watering down the gospel to draw crowds. Current trends show little change as churches head farther in that direction. Continue reading

Your Gift and Purpose in Life

I came across this quote the other day on a church web page.

‘The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away.”

The quote was attributed to William Shakespeare. However, that doesn’t sound exactly like the type of thing he would writeth or sayeth. Yet, regardless of its source, the quote offers some wonderful life advice. Plus, it has a Biblical basis. Continue reading

Luke 18:15-17

The late Celestine Sibley was an American author and journalist who wrote a regular column for the Atlanta Constitution for many years. She also wrote 25 books including the award-winning, Children, My Children.

Sibley tells about once taking her three children to a diner for breakfast one morning. It was crowded and they had to take separate seats at the counter. Eight-year-old Mary was seated at the far end of the counter and when her food was served she called down to her mother in a loud voice, “Mother, don’t people say grace in this place?” Continue reading

What Are The Odds?

How’s your bracket looking?

As you can see mine suffered lots of losses in the first round. The left side is totally busted. And I only have one of my final four guesses correct.

Of course, no one in the history of NCAA basketball has ever had a perfect bracket. No one.

Do you know the odds? Continue reading

Discipleship is Fundamental

There’s an old story of a fellow walking through a cemetery of by gone days reading the epitaphs. Many were familiar sayings. “Rest in peace.” “A friend to all.” “Loving Mother.” “Gone but not Forgotten.”

Then he spotted a most unusual epitaph. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: March 25-29

Greetings From Beverly Hills, FL

This has been an interesting week.  We’ve struggled a bit to post every day in a timely fashion.  However, with a little help we made it.  Thanks for your patience.  And support.

Also, in the past 24+ hours an old column, “It’s Friday.  But Sunday’s Coming!” has received an inordinate number of hits.  In fact, yesterday was our biggest number of both hits and readers views of 2024. So, if you’re not familiar with these posts,  I’m attaching a link to those columns, including the one that’s the most frequently read. Continue reading

Worshipful Music

Today’s facebook Friday comes from a facebook post a few months ago from Plain Talk, a paper edited by the late Robert F. Turner.

Known for his concise, yet profound writing, brother Turner influenced so many of us as young preachers who received Plain Talk during its 20 years of publication,.  His well written articles challenged our thinking as they edified, enlightened and encouraged us. And gave us much food for thought.

This piece from July 1969, is still very applicable today. Continue reading
