Did you hear about the man who was on his death-bed? Suddenly the aroma of his favorite chocolate chip cookies filled the air, wafting down the hall into his bedroom. Mustering all the strength he could summons, he pulled himself out of bed, slowly staggered down the hall, and made it to the kitchen. Continue reading

How Often Should I Forgive Others?
Did you hear about the man who was sitting in a coffee shop, across from a woman who was engrossed in her newspaper. One of the headlines blared: “12 Brazilian Soldiers Killed.” She sighed and shook her head at the sad news.
Then, turning to the man, she quizzically asked, “How many is a Brazilian?” Continue reading

Four Considerations For Your Life
Yesterday morning when I turned on the news I learned of the death of troubled country music singer Mindy McCready from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She leaves behind two sons, 6 years old and 10 months.
Then after returning from the hospital and visiting a sister having surgery, I checked facebook and learned that two my friends suffered the loss of loved ones. Our prayer list is filled with good people who are sick. Suffering. Fighting seriousness disease. And dealing with terminal illness.
It reminds me of this Bible warning.

What Do Past Presidents Think of the Bible?
“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible, once affirmed our first President George Washington. In his farewell address, September 19, 1796, Washington said, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of right and order which Heaven itself has ordained. … Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.” Continue reading
IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Faces Around the Cross: Peter
Self-assured. Self-assertive. Self confident. These words describe the attitude of one of the faces around the cross. He was a follower of Jesus. A part of the inner circle. He was a daring man. A man of faith. A man of action. Some might say his boldness bordered on arrogance. That he was over-confident. Brash. Bellicose.
You know the name behind this face is Simon Peter. The apostle. Do you remember what he did? Continue reading

Is it True Love?
Alan Smith tells the story of the two friends who were discussing the possibility of love. “I thought I was in love three times,” one fellow says.
“How so?” his friend asked.
“Five years ago I deeply cared for a woman who wanted nothing to do with me.”
“Wasn’t that love?” his friend asked. Continue reading

What’s the State of the Union?
Last night President Obama delivered the traditional state of the union address. I am writing this prior to the speech, since I will be in a church service and miss it. Here’s what I’m guessing will be in the speech. Continue reading

Anger Management in the Home
In the spring of 1894, the Baltimore Orioles came to Boston to play a routine baseball game. But what happened that day was anything but routine. The Orioles’ John McGraw got into a fight with the Boston third baseman. Within minutes all the players from both teams had joined in the brawl. The warfare quickly spread to the grandstands. Among the fans the conflict went from bad to worse. Someone set fire to the stands and the entire ballpark burned to the ground. Not only that, but the fire spread to 107 other Boston buildings as well. (From “Daily Bread”) Continue reading
“Under the Circumstances”
There’s an old story about a little lady who was known to be very negative. In fact, folks at church hated to ask, “How are you?” Because she would given them an “organ recital”!
One Sunday as she was leaving the church building the preacher cheerfully exclaimed, “It’s beautiful day, sister! How ya’ doing!”
She turned and with a look of resignation whined, “Pretty good under the circumstances.” Continue reading

What Do You Think of the Brotherhood?
The Brotherhood? No, I’m not talking about a Stephen Knight expose. Or some secret order. Or a cult. Or a radical religious group. Or the 2001 horror flick!
I’m talking about the brotherhood that Peter, the apostle, mentions in the New Testament. Here’s the context of what he says. Continue reading
