I recently read about a young man who was driving home late one night on a quiet country road. He had traveled the route many times and knew every turn, sign, and intersection. Confident and relaxed, he turned up the music, pulled out his phone to check a message, and thought, “Just a quick glance—it’s no big deal.” Continue reading
Weekly Recap: June 9-13
Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL
From Pre-op, to Norma Jean’s surgery, to Post-op, this has been quite a week.
Norma’s last surgery, in fact her last hospital stay, was 52 years ago when Kenny was born. So, for us, this was new territory. Thankfully, the surgery was successful. And the one unspoken concern, which we never verbalized to each other, was what pathology would find from the fibroid. What a relief to hear the surgeon say it was negative. Norma’s recovery is typical of most Parkinson’s patients. But she is making slow and steady progress each day. Continue reading

Mission
Today’s facebook Friday features a post from my friend and preaching colleague, Wilson Adams.
Wilson’s newsfeed hasn’t been automatically appearing on my page lately. So, I had to look for it. Turns out I’ve been missing some really good stuff, which is no surprise. Wilson’s an excellent writer with a special gift.
This post is short. But packs a powerful, penetrating message about mission. Continue reading

What Does the Bible Say?
The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) is holding their annual meeting this week in Dallas. On Tuesday, as reported by Kate Shellnutt in Christianity Today magazine, several resolutions were passed with little or no debate that many today would dispute. Continue reading

1 Thessalonians 5:11- The Ministry of Encouragement
This past Sunday I preached a lesson entitled “Disciples Bear Burdens.” One of the points I made was that we bear one another’s burdens through encouragement.
In studying for the lesson, I found this great quote by author David Jeremiah. Continue reading

Guarding Your Zeal Against Complacency
Have you ever read the story of the lighthouse keeper? There are several versions, one goes like this.
Years ago, along a rugged stretch of coastline, there stood a small but vital lighthouse. It was manned by a faithful lighthouse keeper named Elias, who took great pride in his duty. Every evening, he would carefully trim the lamp, clean the lens, and ensure the light burned brightly through the night, guiding ships safely past the jagged rocks. Continue reading

Attitudes That Teach
Plain Talk edited by the late Robert F. Turner was one of my favorite papers “back in the day.” For years I filed and saved every issue.
I recently discovered a link through facebook where I can access every past issue. Continue reading

Finding My True Identity
Nancy Kennedy is a writer for our local Citrus County Chronicle. She not only covers local news but writes a weekly column for the Religious section called “Grace Notes.”
Last week Nancy wrote about covering local graduations and shared some of the graduates’ wisdom from their speeches which she suggested “seemed different from years past.” In fact, she opined that “this generation seems to have a depth and wisdom that I never had when I graduated from high school in 1973. Proverbs 10:4–The Fruit of our Hands
On a recent road trip we saw a billboard with bold letters that challenged us to “ELIMINATE POVERTY IN OUR LIFETIME.”
I turned to Norma Jean and said, “I guess they never heard Jesus’ statement: “You will always have the poor with you” (John 12:8). Continue reading
