No Pets Allowed

Pressing On is an e-magazine edited by my friend and preaching colleague, Mark Roberts. It’s a bargain at just $10 a year.

Browsing the PO facebook page I found this article by one of the regular staff writers, Dene Ward, an author of Bible class literature, speaker at women’s events, and a devotional blogger. You can find her posts at flightpaths.org

Dene offers an excellent exhortation regarding an issue that has become all too prevalent, especially on social media. Continue reading

Disciples Are Disciplined

This month I’ve been presenting a series of sermons on the ABC’s of Discipleship. Literally. Letter by letter. Last week was the letter “D” and we discussed the value of discipline.

In preparing the lesson came across this observation by William Barclay about Samuel Taylor Coleridge the British poet. “Never did a great mind produce so little.” Continue reading

1 Timothy 2:1-2: Pray for the President

In the past five months since Donald J. Trump began his second term in office, he has continued to be criticized, second-guessed, and verbally attacked with vengeance and vitriol.

He must be the first President in history that can’t do anything right. He’s been subject to intense scrutiny and criticism over actions and policies his predecessors have taken, or at least promoted, yet they were not castigated by the news media. Continue reading

I Stand on My Faith

DeMeco Ryans may not be a familiar name to most of our readers. Unless you’re a NFL football fan, and especially a fan of the Houston Texans, you probably didn’t know Ryans is head coach of the Texans.

Honestly, I really didn’t know much about Ryans until I read an article about him in the Christian Chronicle. Continue reading

When the World Steals Your Zeal

“The world says love yourself, grab all you can, follow your heart. Jesus says deny yourself, grab your cross and follow me,” wrote contemporary author Francis Chan.

This challenge Chan describes is not new nor unique to our 21st century culture. It’s as old as the succinct description during the Old Testament Judges “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” Continue reading

You Are Not Alone

This weekly column is intended to find positive, insightful, or informative posts on social media. Not everything is negative. There is a lot in which to find encouragement.

In fact, there is so much good stuff, it’s difficult to pick one post to feature each week. Today’s post from the Mindful Christianity page speaks to me. And hopefully you will find it helpful, as well as our comments from Psalm 46. Continue reading

The Prince of Peace in a World at War

As I sit in the early morning darkness drinking a cup of hot coffee and writing this blog post, it’s peaceful. Quiet. Calm. However, if I was writing this from Israel, it would be a different story.

The current Israeli-Iranian conflict, has overshadowed the recent fight with Hamas and the conflicts in the Gaza strip. Almost forgotten, at least in the news media, is the war between Russia and Ukraine. Continue reading

John 1:1-14–The Word

Billy Sunday once said in a sermon that there are 256 names given for Jesus in the Bible. Then he added, “I suppose this was because He was infinitely beyond all that any one name could express.” Sunday’s comment reminds me of an observation made by Ralph Waldo Emerson who said that Jesus’ name “is not so much written as ploughed into the history of this world.”

I’ve been working on a series of lessons for the Wellandport VBS about the names of Jesus based on material from Apologetics Press. The five we’ll be studying are Messiah, Nazarene, Lord, Almighty, and Savior. I wish we could have a sixth lesson from today’s text Continue reading
