Word of the Week: Judge

Judging.Bible

“I think I’ll just say I don’t agree with judging fellow human beings like this and leave it that!”

This was the response from one of my readers regarding a recent post on America’s Abortion Culture.

After replying to her objections, she did respond again saying, “ I don’t think Jesus (as far as I remember from childhood teaching) ever tried to change things by judging others. Compassion might change things. Helping people overcome bad circumstances might change things. But not judgment.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Endurance

JimRyun.2This Thursday, June 5, 2014, one of the most significant athletic accomplishments of the 20th century will be celebrated in San Diego at Balboa Stadium: the 50th anniversary of Jim Ryun’s sub-4 minute. He was the first High School athlete to achieve that extraordinary feat.

While Ryun never won an Olympic gold metal–his best finish was silver in the 1968 Mexico games–he did hold world records in the half-mile, 1500m and mile. In the ensuing years Ryun served five terms as a Congressman from his home state of Kansas. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Change

My  friend, Jim Dorn, shared this story with me a couple of years ago.

There was a family that lived out “in the sticks”, far from civilization. One day the family made their first trip to the “big city” and visited a mall. They were amazed by almost everything they saw, but especially by two shiny, silver walls that could move apart and back together again.

The boy asked his father, “Pop, what is this?” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Honor

Honor.MothersDay

Anna Marie Jarvis was 12 years old when she got the inspiration for a special day celebrating mothers.

Her mother was teaching a Bible class on “Mothers of the Bible.”  At the end of class, Mrs. Jarvis said, “I hope that someone, sometime will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.”  Continue reading

Word of the Week: Honesty

Honesty

Teddy Roosevelt, our 26th President, was quite a colorful character. He was an author, naturalist, historian and explorer. When the Spanish-American war broke out in 1898, he helped form the famous “Rough Riders.” And for a period of time he operated a ranch in the Dakotas. His reputation was one of honor. Honesty. And integrity. Continue reading

Men, suppose you are having one of those intense conversations with your wife. There is some area of disagreement. Dissension. Or at least, misunderstanding.   So, she says to you, as she rolls her eyes, in a voice of exasperation, “You‘t don’t even know me!”

What if my wife said that to me, and I responded this way? Continue reading

The headline read: “Matty Lovo is a Hero”

I googled it. And it’s a true story. Matty Lovo, then 9 years old when it happened, saved his father’s life.

Matty’s dad, Matty Lovo, Sr, a semi-tractor-trailer driver, was hauling lumber through St. Helens, Oregon, when he had a seizure and lost consciousness. The semi veered into oncoming traffic. Stuck a utility pole. And seemed destined for a tragic accident.  Continue reading

Word of the Week: Character

My friend, Don Truex, shared a great story that came out of Wayne, New Jersey last Fall.

Four young men from the William Paterson University football team entered Buddy’s Small Lots to do a little shopping. Soon they realized no one else was in the store. Not even a sales clerk!  Continue reading

Word of the Week: Wisdom

Open books background

Some of you from my generation and older may remember Art Linkletter. He hosted a day time TV variety show called “House Party” from 1952 to 1969. My Mom loved to watch it.

One of the segments from that show was called “Kids Say the Darndest Things.”   Years later Bill Cosby did a show with the same title and similar results. The premise was based on asking a child, usually 3-8 years old, a question that would elicit a cute response.

Whether from those shows or another source, I came across these funny responses from children after they were given a well-known proverb and then asked to come up with the ending.  Continue reading

Alan Smith tells the story about a boss complaining in his staff meeting that he wasn’t getting any respect from his employees.

Later that morning he went to a local sign shop and bought a sign that read, “I’m the Boss”. He then attached it to his office door.

That afternoon, when he returned from lunch, he saw someone had taped a note to the sign that read: Continue reading
