With such an emphasis today on the “week-end” as a time for travel, recreation, or sporting events it is easy to forget that Sunday is the first day of the week.

It is a unique day in history.  It is a day sanctified in Scripture.  It is a day special to all Christians.

Today, we are “snow bound” in KCMO! So, I thought it would be appropriate to reblog this post.

“As white as the driven snow,” wrote Shakespeare in A Winter’s Tale. In Macbeth the poet used the expression “pure as snow.”  Is there any better metaphor for whiteness than snow?

We witnessed this first hand recently in Kansas City, Missouri.  We’ve had snow.  Lots of it!  Over two feet.  Following the first snow, Norma Jean and I marveled one night on how light everything looked behind our house.  The snow was so white.  So bright.  So intense in color that it looked like day light!

But do you know what’s whiter than snow?

Should Christians Quit Saying “The Bible is the Word of God”?

Bibe.MS“It isn’t inerrant and not likely even in the “original manuscripts.” But then, I cannot say that with absolute certainty, anymore than anyone else can either, writes Steve McSwain in the Huffington Post regarding the Bible.

McSwain, who is billed as a “Thought Leader, author, speaker and spiritual teacher,” posted this under the title “Six Things Christians should just stop Saying.”   Why does McSwain make this charge?  His answer? Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Faces Around the Cross: The Railing Robber

Cross.ThiefIt has been said that a man is made in a crisis.  I don’t think so.  Rather, I believe that a man is revealed in crisis.  Problems declare our demeanor.  Either kind or caustic.  Adversity unveils our underlying attitudes.  Either positive or negative.   Hardship displays our true character. Either honorable or disgraceful. Continue reading

One Quality for Success You Can’t Do Without

self.disciplineSunday evening Norma Jean and I were invited to join the young people of the Eastside church in Baytown, Texas, where I’m holding a meeting, for their monthly devotion.  Following the food, fellowship and singing,  I was asked to share a few thoughts.  It’s always fun to be part of youth activities.  I love their enthusiasm.  Their energy.  Their excitement.  Not just for life.  But for spiritual matters.

So, what would I share with them?  I decided that if I only had one chance to encourage them, there is a topic that will impact every area of their lives.  Their school work.  Their social activities.  Their relationships.  Their spiritual growth.  Their morality.  Their succeess or failure in life.    And it will help you too.  Young or old.  Here it is. What Do You Think of the Brotherhood?

BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood?  No, I’m not talking about a Stephen Knight expose.  Or some secret order. Or a cult. Or a radical religious  group.  Or the 2001 horror flick!

I’m talking about the brotherhood that Peter, the apostle, mentions in the New Testament.  Here’s the context of what he says. Continue reading

Are Your Relationships Real?

Manti.teoCrazy.  Unbelievable.  Bizarre.  All of these words (and more) describe the incredible situation of Manti Te’o.

The 21-year-old Te’o, a star linebacker for the Notre Dame football team, has been ridiculed, questioned, and doubted for his role in the hoax that led him, the Notre Dame football team and the public to believe that his girl friend died of leukemia.

In the outside chance that you missed this story.  Sometime in 2009 Manti Te’o began an online relationship with a girl he believed was named Lennay Kekua.  Evidently there were facebook messages, texts, emails and phone calls.  But they never met!  Because she was not real!  She didn’t exist! Time To Begin Anew

2013

Time is something that is unique to mankind.

All that we do is measured by time. Employees take their time card and punch a time clock every day. Their pay is based on time. Some of us carry day planners to remind of us appointments so that we are on time! Most sporting events are based on time. We wear watches to keep track of the time. And, of course, a year is measured by time according to the Gregorian calendar. Continue reading
