Veterans-Day2014

During the Iraq war in 2004 the Wall Street Journal ran a front page story about the “new training” the Marines were receiving.

In addition to being drilled in combat skills and heavy weaponry, they were receiving instruction regarding respect for the Iraqi citizens. The Marine commanders borrowed the maxim from the Hippocratic Oath: “First do no harm.”  The philosophy behind the new protocol was not intended to put the Marines at unwarranted risk, but defuse hostility and suspicion. The article called it  a “reprogramming campaign” that teaches these skilled soldiers to ask questions first and shoot later.

Life Lessons Learned from Yogi-isms

Yesterday the Yankee Legend Yogi Berra died. Several months ago ThePreachersWord ran a post with some of his famous quotes. We’re reblogging it for those who may have missed it. And if you saw it, I’m sure you’d enjoy reading it again. It will put a smile on your face.

Yogi Berra

Former Yankee great and baseball Hall of Famer, Yogi Berra, turned 90 on Tuesday. Berra was known, not only for his  All Star career, but his “Yogi-isms,” funny quips about life and baseball.

His family, friends, and fans gathered to celebrate his remarkable life and career, and to recall some of his famous “Yogi-isms”

Several years ago, Sports Broadcaster, Brent Musburger, told a story that one Fall day Yogi was burning leaves in his yard. Suddenly the wind picked up, and it was getting harder to get the fire line under control. The flames got a bit more aggressive and headed toward a storage shed on the property. So he ran in to call the fire department for help.

Stay Focused On Your Purpose

purpose.bible

The Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World.”   It is called  “the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage.”

The Temple’s inspiration was supposedly based on the great love the Moguel emperor Shah Jahn had for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal.  When she died he was devastated.  Grief stricken, he ordered this edifice erected as her final resting place.  No expense would be spared in honoring his beloved.  Continue reading

We All Need A “Storm Home”

Blizzard

On the PBS radio program, Prairie Home Companion, Garrison Keillor, the American author and humorist, once told the story about his “storm home.”

Keillor was entering the seventh grade and the principle, Mr. Detman, was fearful of a winter blizzard that would strand the students. So he assigned each student from the country a “storm home” in town near the school. If a blizzard struck, each child was to go to his or her storm home. Continue reading

Don’t Worry! Live in Hope!

 HOpe. God Gives

Libby, a 95 old Christian lady, was a nursing home and received a visit from a fellow church member, Gladys.

“How are you feeling?” her friend asked.

“Oh,” said Libby, “I’m just worried sick!”

“What are you worried about, dear?” Gladys asked. “They’re taking good care of you, aren’t they?”

“Yes, they are taking very good care of me.”

“Well, what are you worried about?” Gladys again inquired Continue reading

In Memory of My Mother

Thinking about my mother today. This is the 6th Mother’s Day, since her passing. I miss her very much. But am blessed with great memories. And share in her hope of eternal life. Here is a post I wrote 3 years ago in memory and honor of my Mom.

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

Yesterday was Mother’s Day.  Some of you received flowers.  A nice card.  Maybe candy.  And of course, it’s a time to take Mom  out to eat!  But I hope you all remembered to give your mother the gift of honor.  “Honor your mother” is commanded from the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:2.   The word “honor” means to esteem, to revere, to value, or to venerate.

My Mom, Mattie Weliever,  passed from this life on December 29, 2009, but I continue to honor her. While my reasons may be  different from yours, here is why I hold my Mom’s memory is such high esteem.

Two Of Life’s Greatest Challenges

TImeOut

There was a rambunctious little boy who was always getting into trouble. One particular day when his Mother was trying to get some house work finished, he was into everything. Undoing what she has done. Causing havoc. And generally getting on her nerves.

Finally she said, go sit down in that chair in the corner and be quiet! He looked at her defiantly and said, “No.” Well, that did it. She picked up. Took him to the chair. Sit him down with some authority. And said firmly, “You stay in the chair, until I tell you get up, or you’re going to get a whipping!” Continue reading

Lord, Have Mercy!

Mercy.Cross

An 80-year-old woman was arrested for shoplifting. When she appeared in court, the Judge asked her, “What did you steal?”

“A can of peaches,” She replied.

When the Judge asked her why, she said that she was hungry. “How many peaches were in the can?” asked the Judge.

“Six.”

The Judge said, “Then I will give you six days in jail.”

Before the Judge could pronounce the sentence, the woman’s husband spoke up and asked if he could say something. Continue reading
