Sunday Seed Thoughts: What Seeds Are You Sowing?

“When I keep my thoughts positive and my words affirmative, I create an environment that produces positive action. I become the fertile ground for abundant good to manifest,” wrote the authors of Daily Word.

“Into the matrix of spiritual substance, I plant seed thoughts… Seeds of light fill me with new insights…Seeds of love show up in my world as harmony and peace.” Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Blood

Today, I’m thinking about the needless blood that has been shed in our country. Blood shed by criminals. Blood shed by rioters and looters. Blood shed accidently and inadvertently. And sadly blood shed by reckless, rouge and sometimes racist cops.

We often lament that an innocent person’s life was taken. I understand the context of that statement. We’re saying he didn’t deserve to die in that situation. However, there was only ONE person who actually died an innocent death. He was Jesus of Nazareth. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Who Loves You?

Dr. Karl Barth, the Swiss born theologian, has been called “one of the most brilliant and complex intellectuals of the 20th century.”

Barth was a prolific writer as he authored massive volumes on the meaning of life and faith. The story is told that he was once visiting America, speaking at a theological seminary. During a Q & A session one of the students asked Barth what he no doubt thought to be a very deep and probing question.

“Dr. Barth, what was the greatest thought that has ever crossed your mind? Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Memorial Day

“Memory is the way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose” wrote author Kevin Arnold.

On this memorial day week-end, many will visit cemeteries to place flowers on the graves of departed loved ones. It’s a way to remember them. Pay your respects. Reflect on their lives. Your relationships. And hold on to a precious memory.

I’m reminded at this time of year that every Sunday is memorial day for Christians. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: When To Assemble Again?

Today, I am blessed for the second consecutive Sunday to be worshiping with and preaching for the brethren in Cosby, Tennessee.

The situation up here in the mountains is unique. There have been only 18 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Cocke county where the church is located. And no deaths.  In neighboring Sevier county only 65 cases with 2 deaths. Continue reading

Happy Mother’s Day

“All that I am, or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother,” once reflected President Abraham Lincoln.

I’m sure Lincoln’s sentiments are the feelings of many of us as we approach a celebration of mother’s day this year.

The two most influential women in my life have been my mother, Mattie Weliever, and my wife, Norma Jean, the mother of our children. My life is better, stronger, and richer because of their profound influence in my ministry. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Be Still

Restless. Frustrated. Agitated. Anxious. Unsettled. Uneasy. Upset.

These words describe the feelings of many today who’re eager to return to some sense normalcy after “sheltering in place” for so long. Of course, they also may describe the apprehension of others who feel our government is reopening up too soon. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: Virtual Worship

Good Lord’s Day morning!

Today is our fourth Sunday of worship by ourselves from our Smoky Mountain retreat.  The local church where we normally worship in Cosby and where I preach when we visit, is not meeting during this current crisis.

Like many of you, we’re participating in a virtual worship service. We’ve visited Temple Terrace and Henderson Boulevard in Tampa as well as the Kettering church in Ohio. Virtually speaking Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: 10 Tips For Online Worshipers

Today Norma Jean and I will be worshiping alone for the third consecutive Sunday. It seems strange. But it’s our new reality. At least temporarily.

With the COVID-19 “sheltering in place” guidelines probably your congregation has also been forced to suspend public gatherings. Many of you, therefore, will be watching online, either live streaming or a video. Some congregations may only have an audio transmission.

So, here are ten tips to help you worship today. Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: We See Jesus

“But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone” (Heb 2:9).

We. See. Jesus.

Today. On this day. On this first day of the week. Every first day of the week. We see Jesus more clearly than on any other day. Continue reading
