Did you hear about the two politicians, Don and Hillard, who were discussing religion? Don said, “I know a lot about religion…probably more than any other politician.”
Hillard smirked and challenged, “Don, I bet you can’t even repeat the Lord’s prayer.”
Bombastically, Don boasted, “I most certainly can. I’ll take that bet!” And so he began, “Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep…..” Continue reading

H.A. Ironside, the Canadian born author and theologian, tells about working as a boy in the late 1800’s to help his widowed mother. For a while he worked for a Scottish shoemaker or”cobbler” named Dan Mackay.
Mackay was known for his faith in Christ and his willingness to openly share it with his friends, neighbors, and customers. Ironside said his shop had a pile of gospel tracts and his Bible was usually open on the counter. Continue reading

A nurse in the pediatric ward, before listening to the little one’s chest would plug the stethoscope into their ears and let them listen to their own hearts. Their eyes would always light up with wonderment. But she never got a response to equal four-year old David’s. Gently he tucked the stethoscope in his ears and placed the disk over his heart.
“Listen, she said, “What do you suppose that is?”
He drew his eye brows together in a puzzled line and looked up as if lost in the mystery of the strange tap-tap tapping deep in his chest. Then his face broke out in a wondrous grin. Continue reading

There is a word in the Bible that is filled with danger. In fact, Jim Kilson calls it “the most dangerous word.”
What do you suppose it is? Sin? Satan? Hell?
Kilson shares this hint. “The word is one of the easiest to speak, and one of the most fatal in its effect. It shines like a mirage in the desert, deceiving with a false promise. It’s the word that shines like a beacon, leading fools to their ultimate destruction; it’s without a doubt Satan’s favorite word…..” Continue reading

It has been observed that the mark of a great leader is the demands that he makes upon his followers.
The 19th century Italian freedom fighter, Garibaldi, offered his men only hunger and death to free Italy. During WWII British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that he had nothing to offer the English people except “blood, sweat, toil, and tears” in their fight against the enemies of England. An investment counselor went out on her own. She was shrewd and diligent, so business kept coming in. Pretty soon she realized she needed an in-house counsel, and so she began interviewing young lawyers.
“As I’m sure you can understand,” she started off with one of the first applicants, “in a business like this, our personal integrity must be beyond question.”
She leaned forward and continued, “Mr. Peterson, are you an honest lawyer?” Continue reading

In The Gift of Forgiveness, Dr. Charles Stanley relates an unforgettable story of his college professor who illustrated the concept of grace in a very practical and memorable way.
“At the end of his evangelism course he would distribute the exam, and caution the class to read it all the way through before beginning to answer it. As we read the test, it became unquestionably clear to each of us that we had not studied nearly enough.”
“The further we read, the worse it became. About halfway through, audible groans could be heard throughout the lecture hall. On the last page, however, was a note that read:” Continue reading

“My mom taught us as a Christian, your character, your integrity and how you honor God were so much more important than your job title,” shared coaching great Tony Dungy in his acceptance speech at Saturday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.
Dungy is a class act. He lives in the North Tampa area close to where I preached for nine years. Over time I heard several stories from members who met Tony or happened to see him grocery shopping in Publix. He was always kind, cordial and thoughtful. I had one occasion to meet him at a leadership dinner sponsored by Florida College. He graciously signed an autographed program and took the time to engage in conversion. Continue reading

Norman Cousins, who was the editor-in chief of the Saturday Review for over 35 years, was told in 1964 that he only had a few months to live. He had a rare disease of the connective tissues called Ankylosing Spondylitis. He was told to “get his affairs in order” since he had only 1 chance in 500 to live.
However, Cousins would not accept the diagnosis. He then did something unheard of and unprecedented. He fired his doctor. Left the hospital. Checked into a hotel. And began to research a solution to his problem. Continue reading
