Great Verses of the Bible: Daniel 1:8

I recently read a story about Charles Spurgeon, the 19th-century British evangelist, who was conducting a boys Bible class on the book of Daniel.

One of the boys was asked to read some verses aloud, and he came to the passage in Daniel 6:3 which reads “…Daniel distinguished himself above the governors and satraps, because an excellent spirit was in him.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Mark 13:37

A little boy, Jason, wanted a watch for his birthday. As kids do, he began hinting about it to his parents. At first, they ignored it.

Then Jason began to pick up the pace, talking about how much he wanted a watch. “We’ll see,” they said.

Not sure if they got the point, he began talking about watches every time he could work in the conversation. Finally, in exasperation, his Dad said, “Jason, if you don’t be quiet about this watch, you won’t get anything for your birthday.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Matthew 18:3-4

Leonard Ravenhill tells the story about a group of tourists visiting a picturesque village in Europe. As the tour guide was relating the history of the village a tourist saw an old man sitting on a bench.

In a rather patronizing way, the tourist asked the old gentleman, “Were any great men born in this village?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 13:34

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways”

These words are the familiar opening lines of Elisabeth Barrett Browning’s famous 43rd sonnet. What may not be as familiar to most people is Browning’s background.

She was a frail, sick woman who was dominated by a possessive father. She spent most of her time alone in an upstairs room medicated by opium. Elisabeth’s one outlet, producing joy, was her poetry. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 119:60

“Instant obedience is the only kind of obedience there is; delayed obedience is disobedience,” wrote Thomas ‘a Kempis, the 15th century Scribe noted for his famous work The Imitation of Christ.

Oswald Chambers expressed it this way. “One step forward in obedience is worth years of study about it.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Mark 8:34

Some time ago I read a “true story” about a preacher who was standing at the door shaking hands as the congregation departed. He grabbed one man by the hand and pulled him aside.

The preacher said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!”

The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Preacher.”

The preacher questioned, “How come I don’t see you except for Christmas and Easter?” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Romans 8:37

“Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

One of the greatest conquerors of all time was Octavian, the nephew of Julius Caesar. The Roman senate granted him the title “Augustus,” meaning “exalted.”

During his rule, the Roman empire expanded into Hungary, Croatia and Egypt as well as securing Spain and Gaul. He added more land than Julius Caesar and was worshiped as a god. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 119:68

George Muller was a 19th century evangelist, missionary and director of orphan homes in Bristol, England. It is estimated that he cared for over 10,000 orphans in his lifetime.

On February 6, 1870, Mueller’s wife, Mary, died of rheumatic fever. Shortly after the funeral, the 64 year old evangelist, preached a “funeral sermon” as he called it.

What text would Muller choose while mourning the death of his beloved wife of 39 years? Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Deuteronomy 31:6

Joe went to a psychiatrist for a problem that had plagued him for years– fear that someone was under his bed at night.

“Doc,” he pleaded, “You’ve got to help me. I’m going crazy. I can’t get a good night’s sleep.”

“I can cure you in 6 months,” said the doctor. “If you will come 3 times a week, I will rid you of your fears.”

“How much do you charge?” asked Joe.

“$150 a visit.”

“I’ll think about,” Joe replied. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: John 3:16

John 3:16, one of the most famous and widely quoted verses in the New Testament, is in the headlines again.

Former NFL New England Patriots star, Aaron Hernandez, apparently wrote “John 3:16″ across his forehead before he reportedly hanged himself in his prison cell. A Bible in the cell lay open to the same verse. Continue reading
