GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 2Peter 3:18

Lobster

The late author Eda LeShan became noted for the “lobster story” reprinted in magazines, books and blogs through the years.  I recently came across it again and was challenged by its truth and simplicity.

LeShan tells about attending a dinner party and being seated next to an Oceanographer. She wondered, what will we talk about? Almost immediately the gentleman turned ask her, “Do you know how a lobster is able to grow bigger when its shell is so hard?” Continue reading

Albert Lasker, was a prominent businessman and advertising tycoon who lived in the early 20th century. He became known as “the father of modern advertising.”

The story is told that Lasker requested one of his top executives to move from California to the home office in New York. When the man refused, Lasker tried this approach. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Ephesians 3:20

Eph 3.20

I’m not a golfer. But I know that one of the greatest golfers of all time was Arnold Palmer. During his career he won 92 times, including 4 Master’s tournaments. He was PGA player of the year in 1960 and 1962. And Athlete of the Decade in the 1960’s. For years he endeared himself to his many loyal fans called “Arnie’s Army”

I recently read a story that during his heyday Palmer once played a series of exhibition matches in Saudi Arabia. The King was so impressed with Palmer as a person and an athlete than he proposed to give him a gift.

“That really isn’t necessary, Your Highness.” Arnold demurred. “I’m honored to have been invited.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Jeremiah 20:9

Jeremiah 20.9

While returning to the office from lunch yesterday, Justin Berss, my summer preaching intern, and I were discussing some of our favorite Bible verses.

Justin opined that it’s hard to select just one. But when we returned to the church building, he hollered from the adjoining office, I know what my favorite verse is!

“What?”

“Jeremiah 20:9”

“What does it say?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Joshua 1:9

 Joshua 1.9

The soldiers of an infantry unit had been in the field for two weeks when the Sergeant announces, “I’ve got good news and bad news.”

“First the good news. Today we’re going to change our underwear.”

The troops start cheering wildly. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 6:34

worry2

During the war between two city-states in ancient Greece, a spy was captured and sentenced to death. Before the execution he requested an audience with the King.

The interview was granted, and the condemned man stood before the Ruler and begged “O great king, if you do not execute me, but instead allow me to live a mere two years longer, I will teach your favorite horse to sing.”

The king thought “What’s two years? I can always kill him later.” So he agreed, and the spy was spared. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Ephesians 4:32

 Ephesians

“The year was 1942; the world was at war. The state of Florida was still in a depression. And 50 cents was a lot of money in those days,” recalls Marilyn Irlbacher.

Little Marilyn was only 8 years old at the time, living in a less than desirable foster care home. And she owed her school 50 cents for some lost books. Unless she paid the fine, Marilyn wouldn’t get her report card.

After hearing this worrisome news, Marilyn ran from the school house in tears. She didn’t have any money. And the very thought of asking her foster parents for the money terrified her. As she ran down the street, she didn’t see the tall man in her path until she ran into him.

“Here’s the rest of the story” In her own words. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 1:14

john 1.14

This week I am participating in the 36th annual Southside lectures in Pasadena, Texas.  It is a wonderful experience and great joy to be with these brethren and to hear powerful lessons by my preaching comrades.  Each brings their own unique style, insights and experience to their assigned lessons.

Yesterday morning my friend, Kenny Moorer, spoke on one of the most profound themes in the  Bible, ‘The Word was Made Flesh”, and presented it in a simple, easy to understand fashion.  This doctrine is found in one of the great Bible verses, John 1:14 Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1Peter 5:8

Lion

Katherine Chappell, an American tourist, was attacked and killed by a lion last week as she toured Lion Park in South Africa’s Gauteng province.

It is a sad and tragic story of woman who is described as “brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited.” “She was very much-loved and shared her love for life with those she met,” her family said.

What makes this young woman’s death even more heart-breaking is the manner in which the attack occurred. Witnesses described what happened. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 14:34

Bible Flag Cross

We are 18 months away from the 2016 Presidential election, and already it’s the daily topic of political pundits.

Many conservative news commentators seem to believe all of America’s ills can be solved by new leadership in Washington. A stronger military. Or a robust economy. The challenges our country faces today are greater and more serious than any of these.

In one of the great Bible verses, Proverbs 14:34, the wise man forever encapsulates the greatness or decline of any nation in a single sentence. Continue reading
