Is Christianity a Part of Your Life?

JohnWittYesterday I had lunch with John Witt.  We had briefly met once, but never spent any time together. The lack of association has been my loss.

John is an energetic 89 years young. He’s a retired minister.  But not retired from ministering.

John shared with me his conversion story. How he was searching for Truth.  His journey.  And how he was converted to Christ.  It’s an intriguing and compelling story.  John was in his late 20’s when he bought his first Bible. Continue reading

Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?

 Together

Twenty-two years ago Rodney King became nationally known after being beaten by Los Angeles police officers.  The African-American construction worker was on parole for robbery and following a high-speed car chase on March 3, 1991 was caught and beaten unmercifully.

George Holliday, a nearby resident, witnessed the vicious beating and video taped it from his apartment balcony.  Mr.  King’s plaintive cry was eventually heard around the world “Why can’t we all just get along?

Following the recent riots, vitriolic response and heated rhetoric regarding George Zimmerman’s acquittal for shooting Travyon Martin, a 17-year-old African-American, King’s question still rings in our ears.  Continue reading

Tonight the San Antonio Spurs play the Miami Heat in the final game for the NBA Championship.  The series should have finished Tuesday night.  But the Spurs didn’t finish!

The Spurs were in control with a 10 point lead going into the fourth quarter.  And with 28 seconds to play they were up five points.  Security guards were lining the floor.  Yellow tape was being stretched around the court to keep the crowd from coming onto the floor.   The victory platform was ready to be rolled out on the court.  In 28 seconds the Spurs would celebrate their fifth championship.  But something happened on the way to the victory stand. Five Characteristics of Caring Christians

Melvin Newland relates a touching story from the Special Olympics several years ago.  The children were having a great time and competing with tremendous dedication and great enthusiasm.  One event was the 220-yard dash. The contestants came to the starting line and at the signal took off as fast as they could.

One boy by the name of Andrew quickly took the lead.  And soon was about 50 yards ahead of everybody else. As he approached the final turn he looked back and saw that his best friend had fallen and hurt himself on the track. Continue reading

Are You a Christian?

CHristian Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian.

I can remember as a boy hearing preachers say “Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, anymore than sitting inside a henhouse makes you a chicken!”  Yes, I know that dates me!  But it’s a vivid analogy. Continue reading

Are You Truly Free?

Have you heard about Lindsey Stone?  She’s the Massachusetts woman who posted the above picture of herself on facebook.  As you can see she is making a crude gesture and yelling in front of a sign in Arlington National Cemetery that says, “Silence and Respect.”  Obviously, she is doing neither. The post went viral causing a national controversy.  As a result, Lindsey was fired from her job. Continue reading

A Song of Help, Hope and Mercy

I remember as a boy singing, “Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’ve come… ” I may have been singing with  ‘the spirit’, but probably not ‘the understanding’!  These words come from the old hymn “O thou Fount of Every Blessing.”  It’s in most of our songbooks.  But do you know the meaning of “Ebenezer”?  Or the song’s background?
