HOOSIER HYSTERIA

Religious Freedom

When I was a kid growing up in Indiana the incredible excitement surrounding basketball, especially the High School basketball tournament, was called Hoosier Hysteria.

The passion for the game stemmed in part from the inclusion of all schools in a single class tournament where a smaller rural school might knock off a big city giant. Like Milan did in 1954 when they defeated Muncie Central. Incidently, the movie Hoosiers was based on that game.

However, it seems Hoosier Hysteria has changed. Not just in the game of basketball, but in the passion coming from the state of Indiana. Almost unbelievably the rage is over the “Religious Freedom Bill” signed by Governor Pence and how it might somehow negatively impact homosexuals! Continue reading

“Fight Hate With Love”

MegynKelly Isaac Hill

Last week the national news was dominated by the release of a disgusting video from the Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Oklahoma.

Two fraternity members, Parker Rice and Levi Pettit, have been expelled for their role in leading the racist sing-a-long. The chant included racial slurs of African-Americans, boasting they would never be members of their fraternity. And even included the words “You can hang ‘em from a tree.” Continue reading

What Do Past Presidents Think of the Bible?

On this President’s Day, I wanted to share a post that I wrote two years ago. The views expressed by our past Presidents are etched in history and worthy of our consideration in a day when the Bible is too lightly regarded. Enjoy! And have a great day!

Presidents.Day.Bible“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible, once affirmed our first President George Washington.  In his farewell address, September 19, 1796, Washington said, “The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of right and order which Heaven itself has ordained. … Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.”

What’s the State of the Union in 2015?

Capitol.DC

Tonight President Obama will address the nation in the traditional State of the Union Address.  Already the pundits are predicting what he will say and how his proposals will impact the country.

Like all previous Presidents, Mr. Obama will highlight his successes and downplay or ignore his failures.  He will declare that his economic policies are working,  the economy is improving, and Americans are better off. Of course, he will say, “there is more work to do.”  Continue reading

RESTITUTION NOT RETRIBUTION: What Price Should The Rioters Pay?

looting

Former NBA star Charles Barklay, who is never shy about expressing his opinions, called the Ferguson rioters “scumbags.”

In a rare TV appearance, African-American Economist and author, Thomas Sowell, commented on the aftermath of the riots saying, “I think what has happened in Ferguson, Missouri, is going to adversely affect blacks yet unborn, who will still be paying the price for it 10, 20 years from now because they’re not going to have businesses there that you had before.”

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. condemned rioting and violent protests. “I believe rioting is actually an unnecessary evil,” King said. Continue reading

An Alternative Response to Ferguson

Freguson

Last night Norma Jean and I watched the events unfold in Ferguson, Missouri.   We live on the other side of the state, 237 miles away, but it seemed like it was happening in our back yard.

Following three months of hearing witnesses and evaluating evidence, Prosecutor Bob McCullough announced the Grand Jury’s decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown.  Continue reading

A Veteran’s Day Tribute

Veterans-Day2014

During the Iraq war in 2004 the Wall Street Journal ran a front page story about the “new training” the Marines were receiving.

In addition to being drilled in combat skills and heavy weaponry, they were receiving instruction regarding respect for the Iraqi citizens. The Marine commanders borrowed the maxim from the Hippocratic Oath: “First do no harm.”  The philosophy behind the new protocol was not intended to put the Marines at unwarranted risk, but defuse hostility and suspicion. The article called it  a “reprogramming campaign” that teaches these skilled soldiers to ask questions first and shoot later.  Continue reading

CityBacksOff

In a recent post, “Will I Be Put in Prison for Preaching?” I related the story of Donald and Evelyn Knapp who were threatened with fines and imprisonment for refusing to perform same sex marriages.

Yesterday, The Alliance for Defending Freedom, who was legally representing the Knapps posted this update to their blog that I’m reposting in its entirety.

To be clear, our concern is not so much political or social, but religious and spiritual. Continue reading

Will I Be Put in Prison for Preaching?

Hitching-Post-Idaho-638x425

I’m wondering if the day is going to come in America when I will be arrested and imprisoned for preaching the gospel? Could I be put in jail for not performing a wedding ceremony?  Or could I be fined and even incarcerated  for publishing this blog?

You say, “That could never happen in America!”

Think not? Then consider the recent case of Donald and Evelyn Knapp.  Continue reading

What is a Preacher’s Responsibility?

Preaching2

I thought this was a piece of satire when I first read it. But it’s true!

The Houston Chronicle reported that Houston Mayor Annise Parker signed off on subpoenas issued to five local preachers.

And what did the city and the Mayor want from the preachers? Continue reading
