5 Benefits of Discernment

Discernment involves seeing life from the proper perspective. From a spiritual context. From God’s viewpoint.

It’s been said that when Goliath came threatening the Israelite army, the soldiers all thought “he’s so big we can never kill him.” David saw the same giant and thought, “He’s so big, I can’t miss him.”

In yesterday’s post, we introduced, defined and illustrated the concept of discernment. If you missed that post, read it first. Continue reading

Developing Discernment

Spring has sprung. For baseball Spring training camps, that is. Here’s a great baseball story with a wonderful spiritual application.

Dave Bosewell, in How Life Imitates the World Series, tells a story about the late Earl Weaver, manager of the Baltimore Orioles, and how he handled his star player Reggie Jackson.

Weaver had a rule that no one could steal a base unless given the steal sign. This upset Jackson because he felt he knew the pitchers and catchers well enough to judge who he could and could not steal off of. So one game he decided to steal without a sign. Continue reading

Good Morning from Beverly Hills, FL

It’s been a good week here in Citrus County. Wonderful, sunny weather reaching the 80’s. Some down time to relax at home.  And a reminder in many forms of the bounty of blessings we enjoy.

Total Commitment

There’s an old fable about a chicken and a pig walking past an orphanage. The chicken said to the pig, ““We ought to do something nice for these children.”

“Yes”, said the pig. ““I agree. What did you have in mind?”

The chicken answered, “Why don’t we fix them a ham and egg breakfast?” Continue reading

Church growth. It’s a topic of interest to most preachers and pastors. Especially, as we witness the decline of so many churches today. And too often see young people leaving the church.

If you google church growth you will receive 402,000,000 responses in .50 seconds, which offer these insights. Continue reading

How Do You Express Love?

Kentucky author and minister Bob Russell told a story about one Valentine’s Day that he decided to something “extraordinarily romantic.”

As Bob passed by a flower shop he saw a promotion for a special Valentine’s Day package for $85. So, he purchased the beautiful bouquet of roses along with a “mushy card” that expressed his love for his wife, Judy.

Bob placed the roses and card on the kitchen counter and waited in the next room for Judy to return home from grocery shopping. Continue reading

Grow in Knowledge

On this President’s Day I’m reminded of some of the great quotes from past Presidents about the importance of Bible knowledge.

“It is impossible to rightly govern without God and the Bible,” once affirmed our first President George Washington.

John Quincy Adams, our 6th President expressed his feelings almost bluntly “The first and almost the only book deserving of universal attention is the Bible. I speak as a man of the world…and I say to you, “Search the Scriptures.” Continue reading

Living an Abounding, Abundant Life in the Lord

“The Good News concerning salvation is not only what we can be saved from, but what we are saved for,” affirmed Andy Cantrell as he presented the closing lesson at The Florida College Lectures last night.

This observation seemed a particularly fitting summation, not only of the week’s theme, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel,” but Thursday’s lecture focus. Joy, peace, comfort and hope were the four qualities addressed which spoke to the fruit of the gospel that should be manifest in our lives. Qualities in which we ought to be abounding and excelling Continue reading
