Strengthen Yourself

Last Sunday in our Bible class, we tackled the topic of depression and how to handle it from the perspective of the Psalmist. Specifically, Psalm 42 and 43.

In these Psalms the author is distressed, discouraged and dismayed over unfulfilled plans, unsatisfied feelings, and unanswered questions.

Have you ever experienced those feelings?

What can you do when you’re down? Where do you go to find encouragement? To whom do you turn for strength to go forward? Continue reading

Luke 4:13

The devotional paper, Our Daily Bread, tells about an Australian plant called the “Sundew.”

It has a slender stem and tiny, round leaves fringed with hairs that glisten with bright drops of liquid as delicate as fine dew. Although its colorful red, white, and pink blossoms are harmless, its leaves are deadly. Continue reading

75 Years of Life Summarized on a Coffee Cup

A foursome of senior citizen golfers hit the course with waning enthusiasm for the sport.

One said, “These fairways seem to be getting longer and longer.”

The next complained, “And these hills are getting steeper as the years go by.”

The third chimed in, “Yes, and the sand traps seem to be bigger than I remember them. Continue reading

Growing in Character

The poet, playwright, and author, Oscar Wilde, struggled with religion throughout his adult life. While he acknowledged belief in Catholicism, he lived a decadent, epicurean life as a pagan.

In his commentary on Ephesians, William Barclay quotes Wilde as saying, “The gods had given me almost everything. But I let myself be lured into long spells of senseless and sensual ease…”

Wilde then continues with this somber introspective reflection about his life. Continue reading

Psalm 40

An old Bits and Pieces magazine tells the story about an Ozark hound dog sitting in a country store howling as hounds do.

In comes a stranger and says to the storekeeper, “What’s the matter with the dog?”

“He’s sittin’ on a cocklebur.”

“Why doesn’t he get off it?” Continue reading

Twisting Truth into a Lie

Reuters is reporting this morning that California has threaten to cut business ties with the pharmacy chain Walgreens.

In a tweet on Monday, Governor Gavin Newsom said that the state would refuse to do business with “any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” including Walgreens.

So what egregious action has Walgreens implemented to harm women? Continue reading

Growing Your Skills

“There is a theory of human behavior that says people subconsciously retard their own intellectual growth,” wrote author and business consultant Philip B. Crosby. “They come to rely on cliches and habits.”

Crosby further opined, “Once they reach the age of their own personal comfort with the world, they stop learning and their mind runs on idle for the rest of their days. They may progress organizationally, they may be ambitious and eager, they may even work night and day. But they learn no more.” Continue reading
