What’s Tattooed On Your Mind?

I’m on a blogging break while we’re enjoying some R &R in Breckenridge, CO. But here’s a reblog from 2016 about a very important topic that can’t be overemphasized.

Thinking_ManIn his book, Power of the Plus Factor, Norman Vincent Peale relates this story.

Once walking through the twisted little streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong, I came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were displayed samples of the tattoos available.

On the chest or arms you could have tattooed an anchor or flag or mermaid or whatever.
But what struck me with force were three words that could be tattooed on one’s flesh, Born to lose.

I entered the shop in astonishment and, pointing to those words, asked the Chinese tattoo artist, “Does anyone really have that terrible phrase, Born to lose, tattooed on his body?”

Word of the Week: Encourage

We’re taking a blogging break this week while enjoying some R &R time following our meeting in Aurora, CO. So, we will reblog some past posts. This one from 2013 is always relevant. BTW, this is the 75th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s debut into MLB..

Robinson.Reese

This year is the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color-barrier to become the first African-American to play Major league baseball.   The release of the move “42″ and other MLB events have paid tribute to Robinson’s achievements.

His first season with the Brooklyn Dodgers was brutal.  Jackie faced hatred nearly everywhere he traveled. Pitchers threw fastballs at his head. Runners spiked him on the bases.  Ugly insults were hurled from the stands.  And opposing dugouts.  Even the home crowds in Brooklyn taunted him at times.

Seed Thoughts

While on his third missionary journey, Paul came to Troas where he spent the week. He met with the brethren. Worshipped. Communed. And preached. (Acts 20:6-7)

Preaching. It’s been a part of worship since the first century church began on that Pentecost Sunday in Acts 2. Peter preached. He preached Jesus. His death. Burial. Resurrection. And ascension. He preached God’s plan for salvation.

My Soul is Disquieted

There’s a familiar scene in the Peanuts cartoon where Lucy is holding a football for Charlie to kick it farther and higher than anyone in the world.

In this oft-repeated situation, Lucy pulls the ball away at the last second just as Charlie is about to kick it.

AAUGH!

Charlie lands flat on his back. Looks up at Lucy and asks, “Why do I always fall for the same old trick?” Continue reading

Acts 11:19-30

Some time ago a nationally popular denominational preacher spoke to a group of Muslims that one blogger described as “cozying up to extremists.”

Aside from that, one of the things that intrigued me was what he thinks the church needs to be fighting, what he called 5 global giants. — war, poverty, corruption, disease, and illiteracy. While I admit these are huge challenges and agree that as good citizens we ought to be concerned about them, is this the true, scriptural mission of the church? Continue reading

Your Words

“I recently came across this 1997 bulletin article by my friend and preaching colleague, the late Dee Bowman entitled “Be Careful What You Say.”

“It bothers me how we treat one another sometimes,” Dee began from one of his journal entries.

He pointed out that the “The Scriptures say a lot about loving your brother, about making sure that he comes first in your preferences, that he is accorded the kind of respect and honor he deserves, even when you disagree with him.” Continue reading

Word of the Week: Initiative

There is an old saying that offers this insight. “There are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened.”

People who make things happen are people of initiative. They see things that need to be done and they don’t wait to be asked or told they just do them.

Webster says that initiative involves the “energy or aptitude in the initiation of action.” Etymologically it’s rooted in the Latin word “initium” which speaks “to beginning.” Continue reading

5 Reasons To Serve Others

“Enter to Worship, Leave to Serve,” was a slogan that was popular for a period of time, appearing on church bulletins and posted on outdoor church signs. I once saw it displayed at the entrance of the building, so you could see it entering and leaving.

Today, as we join other Christians in worship, think about worship, not just an event. Or a religious rite. Or an end within itself. But as the motivation to take what you’ve learned, felt, and experienced to find expression in service.

Briefly consider 5 reasons why we ought to serve others. Continue reading
