Values. Honor. And Integrity.

The Secret of Soul facebook page recently posted this story about a Kenyan runner Abel Mutai who was competing in a cross-country race in Burlada, Navarre, Spain, in 2012.

Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped, thinking he had completed the race. Continue reading

Joy Thieves

“I have everything I need for joy!” exclaimed Robert Reed.

“Amazing!,” thought Max Lucado as he relates Reed’s story in his book The Applause of Heaven.

“His hands are twisted and his feet are useless. He can’t bathe himself. He can’t feed himself. He can’t brush his teeth, comb his hair, or put on his underwear. His shirts are held together by strips of Velcro’. His speech drags like an {outdated}worn-out audio cassette.” Continue reading

Romans 6:20-23

The late Erskine “Erk” Russell was an American football, basketball, track and baseball player and coach.

For 17 years Russell served as the defensive coordinator for the Georgia Bulldogs (1964-1981). As the first head coach of the Georgia Southern Eagles (1981-1989), he revived the program from a “40 year dormancy” and “established a standard of excellent during his tenure.”

Known for his creative but unorthodox methods Russell once pulled this stunt at Georgia Southern to discourage his players from getting involved in drugs. Continue reading

Did you see the funny typo from Thursday’s blog post?

Psalm 63–“Soul Thirst”

“In the deep recesses of man’s soul lies an overwhelming yearning toward the Creator,” penned A. W. Tozer in the beginning lines of his book “Experiencing the Presence of God.”

That yearning has been described and depicted in various ways by a variety of authors over the years.

Shocking. Shameful. Offensive. Demeaning.

These and many other words we can’t print were used to describe a recent graduation speech by Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker at Benedictine College.

The speech has caused such controversy that over 216,600 people have signed a petition calling for the NFL and the Chiefs to release Butker

So, what did Butker say which was so offensive that every major news network reported it? Continue reading

Obedience is Fundamental

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian and author of the modern classic “The Cost of Discipleship.” He was also an anti-Nazi dissident.

When Hitler began interfering with churches and humiliating the German Jews, Bonhoeffer protested. He refused the fuehrer’s demands and would not participate with the state churches who compromised.

It’s said several of Bonhoeffer’s friends urged him to bend. They reasoned that they would lose the opportunity to preach altogether if they followed his example. Continue reading
