Do you have a bad habit you want to break?
Today’s list, adapted from author Glenda Hotton, who’s also a counselor, lecturer, and university professor, offers 10 specific steps to help you.
I suggest you follow these steps for 30 days to give it a fair chance.
How To Break a Bad Habit
#1 Ask why.
Why do you want to change? How is the habit hurting you?
#2 Write out your answers.
Be honest. Be specific. List the consequences that offer motivation for change.
#3 Confide in a friend.
Accountability helps you succeed.
#4 Be purposeful.
Establish a plan. Good intentions are not enough.
#5 Take the first step.
Beginning is often the hardest part.
#6 Persevere.
Remember old habits feel comfortable. New habits take time to develop.
#7 Avoid temptation.
Flee when the old habit tempts. Go a different direction. Or call a friend.
#8 Think, don’t feel.
Feelings are fleeting, deceptive, and subjective. Make wise choices based on knowledge.
#9 Read Scripture.
Find passages that apply to your situation and read them daily. (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
#10 Rely on God’s help.
Pray. And trust God to help you. (1 Cor. 10:13).
