The other day I came across a page from countryliving.com with this bold headline:

20 Best Sunday Quotes That Confirm It’s the Best Day of the Week

Left out of the list were quotes about God. Faith. Church. And worship.

The 20 quotes spoke mainly of relaxing, enjoying the newspaper, sleeping in late, reading a book, or as a lady, Linda Jones, expressed it, “I need some solitary running time. On Sundays, I can unwind and reconnect with the natural world.”

I suppose other folks would add to the list other activities like watching football games, engaging in water sports, or spending time with family.

Sunday is the best day of the week because it is “the Lord’s Day.”

It’s the day Jesus arose from the dead. It’s the day the gospel was first preached on Pentecost and the church had its beginning. It’s the day first century Christians assembled to take communion and remember Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

Growing up in rural Indiana, Sunday has so many pleasant memories. Getting to services early and seeing my friends. Bible classes with fill-in-the-blank workbooks. Brother Gutherie or Brother Simpson enthusiastically directing singing. Brother Ping leading such a heart-felt fervent prayer. My father’s serious and sober thoughts at the Lord’s table and a tear in my mother’s eye during communion. Brother Mckee’s powerful, passionate presentation of God’s Word. Brother Long, one of our Shepherds, offering gentle and kind encouragement to the congregation. And it was on Sunday that Aude McKee baptized me into Christ for the remission of my sins.

Sunday is the best day of the week because I have an opportunity to share a gospel message that can make a difference in people’s lives. Both in time and in eternity.

I look forward to Sunday to connect with fellow Believers. To assemble and worship with God’s people. My people. People of faith. People of shared values. People with an other-world focus.

For me, faith, family, and fellowship all come together in a special and unique way on Sunday. While our primary purpose is assembling to worship God, it’s an opportunity to engage in the “one another” commands in the Bible.

To greet one another.

To accept one another.

To encourage one another.

To admonish one another.

To pray for one another.

Sunday’s the best day of the week with its shared hugs and handshakes. Smiles and tears. Joyful singing and ardent prayers.

Gospel meetings, guest preachers, baptisms, and restorations all make the memories of Sunday special.

Then there are the afternoon serendipities after services. Sunday dinners. Potlucks at a park, community center or someone’s home. Basketball and volleyball games. Talking about politics, sports, and business with good-natured disagreements. Bible discussions. And spontaneous singing. Then leaving with a warm feeling inside that this day has been a small taste of heaven on earth.

Sunday. It’s absolutely the best day of the week.
