Weekly Recap: July 4-9

Good morning from Beverly Hills, Florida

Well, the impact of Hurricane Elsa, which was downgraded to a tropical storm, was very minimal where we live.  We got lots of rain, but not as much wind as I expected.  It was a good day to relax inside.  And by evening, the sun came out and we went to Bible Study.

We’re looking forward to about a 6 week stay at home before beginning Fall meetings and various other travels.  While at home, I’m preaching most Sundays at the West Citrus Church in Crystal River and teaching a Bible class.  If you’re coming through central Florida, stop by and visit. Friday’s List To Live #47

“13 Things Children Need More Of” was posted on the facebook page of Charlotte Mason Mama, a lifestyle blog that promotes the philosophies taught by the British educator Charlotte Mason.

The author is a lady named Jenny who home schools all 6 of her children. Her blog and web page focus on raising children, the environments of the home, and home education.

Jenny writes in her bio, “Things I love: God, natural wellness, Charlotte Mason home school, home decorating, quiet times, deep relationships, and serving others.”

Let Freedom Ring

While the Declaration of Independence was adopted by delegates to the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, it was four days later, on July 8, before it was read in public.

On that occasion, what is now known as the “Liberty Bell, rang out from the tower of the Pennsylvania State House (now Independence Hall) in Philadelphia, summoning citizens to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence. Continue reading

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

We recognize these words, written by Thomas Jefferson, from the Declaration of Independence, issued 240 years ago today. On America’s birthday we celebrate our freedom and revel in our liberty. We love the feeling of liberty.

As we approach the day of celebration in the United States for our Independence, we give thanks for the freedom we enjoy that has blessed our lives in so many ways.

While we often reflect upon the personal, economic, and social aspects of freedom, let us ever grateful for the freedom of religion as guaranteed by the First Amendment to our U.S. Constitution.

I’m feeling a bit melancholy on this Saturday morning.

I probably shouldn’t feel this way, but I do. It’s a beautiful beginning to the day. It’s a very pleasant 60 degrees on my back porch. The sun is shining. Birds are chirping. Squirrels are scampering about the woods behind us. The deer are enjoying their morning “salt lick.” And the coffee is good.

Why don’t I feel in a celebratory mood?
