IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Love’s Perfect Expression

Cross.Love

George Matheson, born in 1842, was a Scottish minister and hymn writer.  In his teenage years Matheson was diagnosed with a disease that would render him blind by age 20.

However,  he was undeterred by this potential setback.  Determined to get an education, Matheson entered the University of Glasgow and graduated with honors. Continue reading

The Lord is Willing. Are You?

JESUS.LEPER

Last night in our Bible class at Hickman Mills we were studying the miracles of Jesus.  There is a very brief, but powerful encounter Jesus had with a leper.  Here’s Matthew’s account.

“When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”   Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.”  (Matt 8:1-3)

There are at least three things noteworthy about this narrative. Continue reading

Five Life Lessons Worth Learning: How I Wrote 600 Posts!

blog

Last week at the Florida College Lectures, I briefly encountered David Tant as we were entering Hutchinson Auditorium.  He smiled and said, “I see you’ve still found time to write your blog while you’re down here.”

As an off the cuff response I answered, “Yes.  I’m addicted!  It’s a habit!”  I was kinda joking, but there may be more fact than fiction to my retort.  Just ask my wife, Norma Jean! Continue reading

Who Do You Love?

Beauty.BeastIf you have children, you have seen “Beauty and the Beast.”  In fact you probably own a copy!  For those not into fairy tales, “The “Beast” is a Prince who could not love and was placed under a spell.  In order to turn back into a Prince, he had to win the love of another and return it before his twenty-first birthday.  But who could love a grotesque beast?  Well, this is where the lovely Belle, a girl from a small French town who is dissatisfied with life, enters the picture. Word of the Week: Merciful

Mercy.Word“Lord, have mercy!”

It’s an expression I heard frequently as a boy when we went “down to the country.”   “Lord, have mercy!”

I can remember hearing my Granny Key say it.  “Lord, have mercy!”

I also remember ten men in the Bible saying it too.  “Jesus, Master, Have Mercy on Us”. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! What’s The Heart of Christianity?

Jesus.King

On Tuesday evening of the Florida College Lectures, Kevin Clark, asked this question: What is the Heart of Christianity?”   He then proceeded to suggest several possible answers similar to these scenarios.  Continue reading

A Man After God’s Own Heart

Heart.Gods

“A man after my own heart” has become an English idiom.  It refers to one with whom we have an affinity.  A bond.  A kindred spirit.  It is an endearing expression that speaks to someone who shares similar tastes.

Bible students quickly relate to the statement regarding King David.  When Saul disobeyed God, the prophet Samuel told him that God was removing him from the throne and replacing him with another King.  He said, “The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart.”  Paul also referenced it in Acts 13:22.  Continue reading

Where Did Saul Go Wrong?

The Bible

The theme this year at the Florida College Lectures is Lessons From the Kings of Israel and Judah.

Yesterday I heard Luke Chandler present a very practical lesson on King Saul that not only depicted Saul’s sins, but warned and reminded us not to make the same mistakes.  Continue reading

Brotherhood.FC

This week Norma Jean and I are blessed  to be on the campus of Florida College to attend their annual lecture series.  It’s a special place for us.

Word of the Week: Obedience

FOllowME

The American Humorist, Mark Twain, told it, so it must be true!  Supposedly he once overheard a prominent and wealthy businessman, known for his ruthless behavior, brag, “Before I die I’m making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  Then I’m going to Mt.Sinai, climb to top and read the Ten Commandments.”  Continue reading
