What if you woke up this morning, January 2, 2014, and you were Jesus?
Oh, you still live in the same house and have the same family. You don’t look any different! You still have the same problems. Challenges. Health issues. You have the same job. Boss. And co-workers. You still attend the same church. The experience and circumstances of your life are exactly the same. Except for one thing!
Today you have the mind of Christ. The heart of Jesus. His life becomes yours! Think about it? Jesus lives inside you! How would it change you from the way you are now? How would you feel? Think? Live?
His attitude is your attitude. His humility guides your every decision. His compassion is the way you look at others. His purpose drives your life. His passion for people influences your relationships. His love is at the heart of your actions. Conduct. And behavior.
And what would others see? Your family? Your friends? Your co-workers? Your fellow Christians? The non-Christian community? Would they see a difference? A change? A new you?
I wonder if Jesus living inside you would alter your activities today? Your schedule? Your treatment of others? Your speech? Your plans? Your priorities? Your prayer life?
Would anything about your life be different today if Jesus woke up inside your heart and mind?
This year the theme at the Hickman church in Kansas City, where I preach, is BECOMING LIKE CHRIST. It is a worthy theme. A noble endeavor. And a challenging goal. One that I believe our readers would like to embrace. It is going to influence my writing this year on ThePreachersWord.
Our theme verse is Rom 8:29. “For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.”
We are to be conformed to Christ. Some modern speech translations read “become like Christ.” It means to be fashioned. To take on the same form. To share in the likeness.
Paul instructed us in Philippians 2:5 “Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus.”
Peter put it this way, “For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps” (I Pet. 2:21)
Three weeks ago I wrote about goal setting for the new year under the heading “Giving God pleasure in 2014.” The thrust of that post was that while setting specific goals is a worthy endeavor, my one overall, overriding goal for 2014 is to “be more like Jesus. In attitude. In attributes. In actions.”
Becoming Like Christ. I think that will keep me busy for the year. How about you?

I think becoming like Christ could occupy me for a lifetime and beyond, given how far I am from the goal, but it’s definitely something to remember and meditate on. On the bright side, I think I’m closer to the fold now than I’ve ever been! Thank you for this inspiring post, Pastor. (I hope Pastor is an appropriate title for you! If not, no offense meant.)
