Michael Catt was correct when he wrote, “If we are going to worship in Spirit, we must develop the spirit of worship.”
This is Biblical. It is one part of the two elements of worship Jesus enunciated to the Samaritan woman when he said, “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth” (John 4:23-24).
God desires worship. And He seeks worshipers. But not on our terms. On His terms. He wants our worship to be according to Truth, which is His revealed Word (Jn 17:17). Truth is absolute. Truth doesn’t change. Truth is vital to God-pleasing worship.
But the second element is sometimes overlooked. Under-emphasized. Or ignored. Worship must be according to spirit. Our spirit. Our heart. Our soul. Our inner being.
So, if we are to worship according to spirit, What is the spirit of worship?
◆The spirit of anticipation.
◆The spirit of gratitude for God’s goodness.
◆The spirit of humility.
◆The spirit of awe in God’s presence.
◆The spirit of joy.
◆The spirit of enthusiasm.
◆The spirit of exaltation.
◆The spirit of unworthiness.
◆The spirit of complete dependence.
◆The spirit of holiness.
Today I hope you have the opportunity to assemble with Christians for worship. I don’t mean just going to church somewhere. But worshiping. I pray that it will be an assembly where truth is respected, taught, and practiced. But I also hope and pray that you will worship God in spirit.

It is a daunting task to offer adequate worship the God of creation. Kind of like cattle singing praises to the farmer. Thankfully God is satisfied with our worship if it is sincere and according to his truth.

These elements, or spirits, are great to think about, especially by someone like me who struggles with this exact point–“how to” worship [in spirit]. I believe they are subjective to an extent, but still wonderful practical points to consider. Thank you.
Oh, and as someone who is unable to worship with my brothers and sisters this morning, it is especially meaningful.
