How Much is Your Bible Worth?

Last Saturday several items belonging to Elvis Presley were sold at an auction, including the Bible, found on his night stand when he died.

The front cover is embossed in gold with his name– “Elvis Aaron Presley.” Also there are a “large amount of book marked pages and underlined passages that seemingly spoke to Elvis,” according to GWS Auctions.

A Time To Embrace

Today, November 7th, according to the calendar of weird and wacky holidays, is observed as National Hug a Bear Day.

You Can Only Do What You Can Do

Norma Jean and I are spending a few days in the area of Bryson City, NC on the way to our annual October visit to Cobbly Nob near Cosby, TN in the Smoky Mountains.

We had planned to drive to Franklin to attend their Wednesday evening Bible Study, but unforeseen circumstances prevented it. So, we spent the evening reading 2 Corinthians.

There is so much to unpack and apply in these passages. How to deal with persecution, adversity, and physical suffering. Overcoming discouragement. What it means to walk by faith. How to excel in holiness. The spiritual warfare we fight. The importance of sacrificial giving. And the need to examine our faith. Continue reading

How To Cope With Criticism

Die-hard college football fans are probably aware of an ongoing feud between sports personality Paul Finebaum and Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney. I just read about it the other day.

Apparently, after Clemson beat in-state rival South Carolina 38-3, Finebaum objected to Swinney’s post-game remarks and called him “the most annoying winner in all of sports on ESPN’s “Get Up” program. Continue reading

Melvin Newland tells a touching story that comes out of the Special Olympics several years ago.

Enthusiasm and excitement filled the air as these special needs children enjoyed athletic competition but also the camaraderie of being with each other. One event was the 220 yard dash. The contestants lined up, and at the signal they began running as fast as they could. Continue reading
