IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Weathering the Storm

Even though we are 1248 miles away, we were watching.  Waiting. Wondering. Would tropical storm Isaac become a hurricane?  Would it hit Tampa?   What would happen if Tampa took a direct hit?  How severe would it be?  And why did we care from so far away? Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Contentment

During the opening Olympic ceremony , Scottish singer Emeli Sande performed a moving rendition of “Abide With Me” in memory of the 52 victims in the 2005 London terrorist attacks.

You may not have seen it because NBC choose not to show it in their prime time edited coverage.  Instead they broadcast a Ryan Seacrest interview with Gold-medalist swimmer Michael Phelps.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Victory

There are always great human interest stories that come from the Olympic games.  And they’re not always the winners. Case in point:  John Stephen Akhwari.  In the 1968 games in Mexico City, Akhwari represented Tanzania in the marathon.

Due to the high altitude he developed leg cramps. Then at the 19 kilometer mark of the 42 km race, Ahkwari was bumped as runners were jockeying for position.  He fell hard to the pavement, wounded his knee and dislocated his shoulder.  But kept running.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Suffering

Two words.  Only one in the Greek language.  But powerful.  Penetrating. Expressive.  “I thirst,” said Jesus before he bowed his head and surrendered His spirit back to the Father.  Just two words.  But they speak volumes about the events that Friday afternoon on Calvary’s hill. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Anguish

Strange. Startling.  Shocking.  All of these words and more describe this plaintive cry of Christ from the cross.  They are unsettling.  They confound us.  They even appall us.  What were they?  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Affection

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Salvation

Luis Acosta tells a story about thieves who broke into a large department store several years ago.  But they didn’t steal a thing.  The stayed long enough to accomplish their mission and escape unnoticed.  Why did they break in? And what did they do?  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Forgiveness

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him” (Jn 1:11).  Some of the saddest words in the Bible.

God became man.  He gave up the riches of heaven.  He humbled himself.  He lived among men.  As a man.  He was tired.  Hungry.  Thirsty. He suffered.  He was tempted. Yet without sin.  He was man.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Anchor Points for Life.

Hurricane season is in full force.  I don’t expect it to affect us much in Kansas!  But I have friends and family in Florida, so I’ll still be alert to the forecast.  A good sailor will tell you, “Don’t tie your boat to the land.  You’ll regret it, if you do.  Your only hope is to anchor deep. Leave some slack in the rope.  And hope for the best!”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Turning Grief to Joy

When the Passover feast ended, and Jesus and taught the lesson on humility and ministry through washing the disciples feet, they began walking across the Kedron valley to the Garden of Gethsemane.  As Thursday turned into Friday the disciples hearts became heavy. Mournful.  Plaintive.  Jesus knew and understood their sadness.  And so he encouraged them, “let not your hearts be troubled.” Continue reading
