GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Galatians 2:20

Crucified with Christ

On January 30, 1973, Patrice Tamao of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, allowed himself to be nailed to a cross “as a sacrifice for world peace and understanding among men.”

As thousands watched on television, six-inch stainless steel nails were driven through his hands and feet. Tamao had planned to remain on the cross for 48 hours, but after only 20 hours he had to cut short his voluntary crucifixion because of an infection in his right foot.

The next day a newspaper headlined the event: “Crucifixion-for-peace falls short.” Continue reading

Render Unto Caesar

Today is April 15th. It’s tax time in the United States. It’s the deadline for filing your state and federal income taxes.

But it’s also a time when you hear resurrected phony arguments to relieve us from the responsibility of paying income taxes. GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 14:1

Psalm 14.1

D. L. Moody was a 19th century evangelist, educator and publisher. The Moody Bible Institute in Chicago is one achievement of his ministry.

Moody preached all over the United States as well as England and Ireland where he held evangelistic campaigns that attracted large audiences. In fact, his last sermon was in Kansas City, Missouri, November 16, 1899.

As a result of his bold style and passionate preaching his meetings were often attended by hecklers who violently disagreed with his teaching.

In the final service of one meeting, an usher handed Moody a note as he approached the lectern. It was from an atheist who had constantly criticized Moody. The evangelist, however, supposed it was an announcement, so he quieted the large audience and prepared to read it. As he opened the folded paper he found scrawled in large print only one word: “FOOL!” Continue reading

Seed

Several years ago “Reader’s Digest” told about a company who mailed out some special advertising cards with a mustard seed glued to it and the following caption:

“If you have faith as small as this mustard seed in (our particular product), you are guaranteed to get excellent results and be totally satisfied.”

A few months later one recipient of this promotional piece responded to the company with this note: Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs 4.23

Remember Steve Irwin? The Crocodile Hunter? He lived life on the edge. And his shows were exciting to watch. Do you recall how he died?

Many people thought a crocodile would finally take his life, or at least claim a limb. Irwin survived many dangers. Countless snake bites. Being chased up a tree by a deadly Komodo dragon. Spat on by a red spitting cobra. And being pulled into the water by a massive crocodile. But none of those claimed his life. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 55:22

Psalms

Little Ethan had a habit of “stretching the truth.”

One day, while walking home from school, he saw a large black dog run across the street right in front of him.   He rushed home as fast as he could and hollered, “Mom! You’re never going to believe .what I just saw!”

“What did you see Ethan?” his mother cautiously asked, Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 46:1

Psalm46.1

In 1517 Martin Luther was just an obscure, unknown Catholic priest. Until.

Until he decided to challenge the teachings of the Catholic church when he nailed his 95 theses on the church house door in Wittenberg, Germany.  Luther challenged the church on 95 points where he felt they were scripturally wrong. This opposition meant a charge of heresy and certain excommunication. It could have resulted in torture and death. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 14:6

John14.4

In his classic book, Mere Christianity, the great British writer, C. S. Lewis, makes this bold and challenging statement about Jesus.

“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher; he’d either be a lunatic — on a level with a man who says he’s a poached egg — or else he’d be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse.”  Continue reading
