GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1Peter 3:8

Bible.Open

This may sound strange to some folks, but other preachers understand this. One of the joys of a vacation from the pulpit is listening to other Bible teachers and being spiritually encouraged, edified and energized. Last Sunday was one of those occasions at the Henderson Boulevard Church in Tampa, Florida.

In addition to the Communion Eulogy and a wonderful sermon by Ralph Walker was the Bible class taught by Paul  Grieving. The study was from the book of 1st Peter dealing with relationships in chapter 3 with an emphasis on verse 8. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Hebrews 11:6

 Hebrews 11.6

In Living Above the Level of Mediocrity, Chuck Swindoll poses this scenario.

Imagine, if you will, that you work for a company whose president found it necessary to travel out of the country and spend an extended period of time abroad. So he says to you and the other trusted employees, “Look, I’m going to leave. And while I’m gone, I want you to pay close attention to the business. You manage things while I’m away. I will write you regularly. When I do, I will instruct you in what you should do from now until I return from this trip.” Everyone agrees. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 1Corinthians 15:58

`1 cOR 15.58

As football begins I’m reminded of the story of Johnny who loved playing sandlot football, but was just a scrawny, little kid and a bench warmer on his high school team.

Johnny’s chance came when the first string quarterback broke his ankle and he became a starter. His dream was to play college football at Notre Dame, but was rejected. University of Pittsburg offered him a scholarship, but he failed the entrance exam. Finally the University of Louisville offered him a scholarship. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Philippians 4:8

Philippians 4.8

“Thought and character are one,” wrote the 19th century philosopher James Allen in  his book As a Man Thinketh. He further makes this forever timely observation about our thinking:

“Man is made or unmade by himself. In the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself. He also fashions the tools with which he builds for himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength and peace. By the right choice and true application of thought, man ascends to the divine perfection. By the abuse and wrong application of thought he descends below the level of the beast. Between these two extremes are all the grades of character, and man is their maker and master.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 2Peter 3:18

Lobster

The late author Eda LeShan became noted for the “lobster story” reprinted in magazines, books and blogs through the years.  I recently came across it again and was challenged by its truth and simplicity.

LeShan tells about attending a dinner party and being seated next to an Oceanographer. She wondered, what will we talk about? Almost immediately the gentleman turned ask her, “Do you know how a lobster is able to grow bigger when its shell is so hard?” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 14:34

Bible Flag Cross

We are 18 months away from the 2016 Presidential election, and already it’s the daily topic of political pundits.

Many conservative news commentators seem to believe all of America’s ills can be solved by new leadership in Washington. A stronger military. Or a robust economy. The challenges our country faces today are greater and more serious than any of these.

In one of the great Bible verses, Proverbs 14:34, the wise man forever encapsulates the greatness or decline of any nation in a single sentence. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Genesis 1:1

He was just a little lad,
and on the week’s first day,
Was wandering home from Sunday School,
and dawdling on the way.

 He scuffed his shoes into the grass;
he found a caterpillar
He found a fluffy milkweed pod,
and blew out all the filler. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: 2Timothy 1:7

2Timothy1.7

George went to a psychiatrist and frantically said, . “Doc, I’ve got trouble. Every time I get into bed, I think there’s somebody under it. I can’t relax. I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in years! I’m going crazy! Can you help me?

“Sure,” replied the psychiatrist. “Just come to me three times a week for the next six months and I’ll cure your fears.”
“How much do you charge?”
“A hundred dollars per visit.”
“I’ll think about it,” said George.   Continue reading
