Great Verses of the Bible: Mark 8:36

Malcolm Forbes, who died in 1990, was one of the wealthiest people to have lived in our time.  Forbes enjoyed all the symbols of status that one can achieve in this life. Prosperity. Possessions. Power. Privilege. And a pleasurable lifestyle that comes with it.

In his book, The Man Who Had Everything, Christopher Winans relates a motorcycle tour that Forbes took through Egypt in 1984. After viewing the tomb of King Tut, Forbes seemed in a reflective mood. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 2Timothy 2:15

A Spokane man, John Underhill, was painting the home of an 89 year-old woman when he noticed a large family Bible prominently displayed on the coffee table. She proudly pointed out that it was 116 years old and a priceless heirloom.

John commented on how remarkable that was, then added, “It doesn’t matter how old the Bible might be, what’s on the inside is what matters.” Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 1Timothy 2:1-2

In two days Donald J. Trump will take the oath of office as the 45th President of the United States. Unless you’re on a total news blackout, you know that this inauguration is being met with protests, demonstrations, and out right defiance in many quarters.

Mr. Trump is entering the Presidency with the lowest approval rating of any President in modern history. At least, that’s what the polls state . To say that his election has been unprecedented and controversial is an understatement. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Luke 13:18-19

mustard-treeIt was on January 1, 2012, that ThePreachersWord entered the world of blogging with our first post. Now 5 years and 4 days later we are writing and publishing post #1400.

It was a small and obscure beginning. With no readers, no advance notice, no advertising and no professional platform we launched in faith that someone would notice. And hopefully read our little blog and recommend it to a friend. Continue reading

Great Verses Of The Bible: Psalm 47:8

ps47-8

“Are you staying up?” my wife, Norma Jean asked, as she left the family room heading to the bedroom.

“I’m going to give it until 10:30,” I replied. “If there’s not a winner. I’m coming to bed. I can find out who won in the morning.”

And so I awake, along with many surprised Americans, to learn that billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump is now President-elect of the United States of America.

ThePreachersWord is NOT a political forum. We only comment on politics as it relates to our spiritual concerns. We have not offered a political preference on this blog site. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Colossians 3:17

colossians-3-17

H.A. Ironside, the Canadian born author and theologian, tells about working as a boy in the late 1800’s to help his widowed mother. For a while he worked for a Scottish shoemaker or”cobbler” named Dan Mackay.

Mackay was known for his faith in Christ and his willingness to openly share it with his friends, neighbors, and customers. Ironside said his shop had a pile of gospel tracts and his Bible was usually open on the counter. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 16:26

 matthew-16-26

“My mom taught us as a Christian, your character, your integrity and how you honor God were so much more important than your job title,” shared coaching great Tony Dungy in his acceptance speech at Saturday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.

Dungy is a class act. He lives in the North Tampa area close to where I preached for nine years. Over time I heard several stories from members who met Tony or happened to see him grocery shopping in Publix. He was always kind, cordial and thoughtful. I had one occasion to meet him at a leadership dinner sponsored by Florida College. He graciously signed an autographed program and took the time to engage in conversion. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Galatians 6:9

Galatians 6.9

Patsy Clairmont, the author of God Uses Cracked Pots, shares a true story about her son, Jason. When he was seven, she sent him off to school one day. After a little while, there was a knock at the door and when Patsy opened the door, it was Jason.

“What are you doing here?” she asked.

“I’ve quit school” he said. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 23:11-12

Bible.Open.Matt 23

There is a story of two Civil War Generals: George A. Custer and Ulysses S. Grant. Both graduated from West Point–Gen. Grant, being the oldest, graduated in the 1840’s and Gen. Custer in 1861. Grant fought in several wars and was a field General in every sense of the word. In 1865, he was the one who forced Robert E. Lee to surrender to the north.

At the surrendering ceremony, Grant wore a mud-splattered uniform of a private, with general shoulder pads sewed on. He was the picture of a man who was a worker and had just finished a job. He said he took no glory in the surrender of a fellow general. Gen. Grant was a humble man and an excellent leader. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 17:17

John 17,17

In the Reality TV show called The Republican Primary, business mogul Donald Trump has been calling Texas Senator Ted Cruz “Lying Ted.”

I haven’t done any fact checking on those charges, but do you think that is fair? The answer reminds me of this old joke. “How can you tell when a politician is lying?” Continue reading
