The Vision of Faith

In 1959 Walt Disney began looking for land to build a second resort to complement his Anaheim, California, park. Supposedly he was not happy with the many businesses that sprung up around Disneyland and wanted enough land to control the development around his next park.

It wasn’t until 1963 that Disney flew over the Orlando, Florida, area and finally decided on this location. The process of acquiring the land and building the park took 9 years. Disney died in 1966 before The Magic Kingdom opened in 1971. Continue reading →

Faith: The Challenge To Believe

A “Doubting Thomas” is a skeptic. He’s someone who refuses to believe unless he can see it. Touch it. And experience it.

It is forever the nickname of the apostle, Thomas, who was not present when Jesus first appeared to the other disciples following His resurrection.

Faith: The Challenge To Know

Today in our VBS at Wellandport as we pursue the theme “Facing Life With Faith,” we are discussing how knowledge and faith are connected.

The Bible says, “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17). As we read and study God’s Word, we increase in knowledge, but that knowledge grows our faith. Of course, our knowledge of God and His revealed will is more than just an accumulation of facts. It is faith-driven.  Heart-felt. And relationally focused.  Thus, Paul was able to affirm, “I know in whom I have believed.” Continue reading →

Word of the Week: Faith

This week at the Wellandport church of Christ in Ontario, Canada, I will be participating in their summer VBS teaching the adult class. Our theme revolves around faith. As I’m looking over today’s lesson, “The Challenge To See,” I’m reminded of this story.

One night a family’s house caught fire and they were forced to run outside. However, the fire blocked their path to the upstairs bedroom where their son was sleeping. The father yelled for the son to open his bedroom window. Continue reading →

Did Peter Deny the Grace of God?

In reading Acts 12, I remembered an old sermon preached 50 years ago by the late Robert Jackson who raised the question, “Did Peter deny the grace of God?”

I remember it well, because I “borrowed” it and preached it several times in my early days of ministry.

The chapter records that Herod Antipas was harassing the church. He killed James with the sword. And then imprisoned Peter. Probably, Herod had in mind the same fate for Peter.

Are We Saved By Faith Only?

“Faith in Christ is all that is needed for salvation,” wrote one of our readers in response to a recent post.

The doctrine of “faith only” is not a new theological idea. Issues surrounding faith and works have been debated for centuries.  And various religious groups give differing answers to the question, “What must I do to be saved?”

Faith that Overcomes the World

Faith has become the object of ridicule in America today. Particularly Christianity.

Our Vice President, Mike Pence, has been mocked for his faith on numerous occasions. In the wake of the recent school shooting those who have offered prayers for the hurting have been received with sarcasm, scorn, and satire in some quarters. Living By Faith

Owen Bourgaize relates an encounter with a woman who saw him as he drove to his office. After parking his car, the lady standing nearby said, “That’s a nice car, but I wouldn’t want to drive it”

Obviously puzzled Owen asked, “Why not?”

Faith: What is it?

Henri Rechatin was a celebrated French tightrope walker who amazed audiences with his high-wire act as he walked across Niagara Falls in the 1970’s.

Once he crossed from the American to the Canadian side pushing a wheelbarrow with a grooved wheel. At the conclusion of this breath-taking fete, he was met with thunderous applause.  Rechatin then asked a little boy who was filled with wonderment, if he believed he could push him across the Falls in the wheelbarrow. If You Want To Go To Heaven, You Need These 3 Virtues

Paul Fritz calls them “the triad of Christian virtues.” R. Davies wrote, “These three graces form the essential elements of the Christian character. An unknown author referred to them as “the holy and beautiful sisterhood of Christians virtues.”

In fact, without these three virtues it’s impossible to make it to heaven.
