A woman woke up one morning, turned to her husband and said, “Honey, I just had a dream that you bought me a new gold necklace. What do you think it means?”
He answered, “I don’t know, but Valentine’s Day is coming soon. Then you’ll know.”
A few nights later, she again woke up after having a dream. She said, “This time, I dreamed you gave me a pearl necklace. What do you think it means?”

This week finds Norma Jean and me in Temple Terrace, Florida, where we will be attending the annual Florida College Lectures. The theme is “From the Beginning: Recovering the Divine Design for Marriage and the Family.”
This theme and this week is an especially meaningful anniversary for us. It was 50 years ago that we had our first date. It was on Thursday, the last night of Lectures. And we heard Robert Jackson close the week with a powerful sermon on “The Final Word.” Continue reading

Today is a national holiday in the United States honoring slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. Congressman John Conyers and Representative Shirley Chisholm are responsible for introducing the bill that President Ronald Reagan signed into law in 1983. Clovis Chappell, a minister from the early 20th century, used to tell the story of two paddleboats. They left Memphis about the same time, traveling down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. As they traveled side by side, sailors from one vessel made a few remarks about the snail’s pace of the other.

Polycarp was a second century Christian who lived at the time of Roman persecution. This godly man, one of the bishops of the church at Smyrna, managed to escape persecution for almost his entire life. However, at age 86, he was suddenly a target of the Roman government.
Friends urged him to flee and go into hiding. Polycarp refused. When the soldiers came to his door, he let the them in and said, “God’s will be done.” Historians record that he was brought before the local proconsul, Statius Quadratus, who interrogated him in front of a curious crowd of bystanders. John Eldredge tells a great story of a rich industrialist who was visiting Mexico and found one of the local fishermen just sitting by his boat, playing his guitar and enjoying a cold drink.
Disturbed to find the fisherman so idle he asked, “Why aren’t you out there fishing?”

The story is told of a truck driver who was hauling 10 penguins to the zoo. Unfortunately, his truck broke down. He eventually waved down another truck and offered the driver $500 to take the penguins to the zoo.
Later that day the first truck driver got his truck fixed and drove into town but couldn’t believe his eyes! Just ahead of him he saw the second truck driver crossing the road with the 10 penguins waddling single file behind him. He jumped out of his truck, ran up to the guy and said, “What’s going on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the zoo!” Continue reading
