One Year Later

“The news of my death has been greatly exaggerated,” once quipped Mark Twain.

I can relate to Twain’s consternation regarding the false news of his demise. Not that anyone has said that “Ken is dead.” But the news of my retirement has been greatly exaggerated.”

While we’re not employed in located work with one church at this time, we are still engaged in preaching the gospel. During the past year, we’ve been in 19 states and 9 countries. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Action

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do,” advised H. Jackson Brown, Jr. best known for his inspirational book, “Life’s Little Instruction Book,”

“So throw off the bowlines,” Brown wrote, “Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Continue reading

Strengthening The Disciples

Someone recently joked that I was a traveling preacher just like the Apostle Paul. They dubbed our work “Ken’s Missionary Journeys.”

Uh, not quite.

Our method of travel is smoother, more relaxing and quicker. Our accommodations have been very comfortable. And I have not been beaten. Stoned. Imprisoned. Or run out of town. Continue reading

What Barnabas Saw At Antioch

Some time ago a nationally popular denominational preacher spoke to a group of Muslims that one blogger described as “cozying up to extremists.

Aside from that , one of the things that intrigued me was what he thinks the church needs to be fighting, what he called 5 global giants. — war, poverty, corruption, disease, and illiteracy. While I admit these are huge challenges and agree that as good citizens we ought to be concerned about them, is this the true, scriptural mission of the church? Continue reading

Sunday Seed Thoughts: He’s Alive!

On this Lord’s Day, as we celebrate Jesus’ life, death and resurrection here’s a bonus reblog post from 2 years ago

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

After six grueling hours of vicious taunts, mental torture and physical torment, Jesus cried with a loud voice, breathed his last breath and “yielded His Spirit.” The centurion guards standing by saw he was dead.

Later solders came to break the legs of Jesus and the two criminals, but they said “He is dead.”

The women standing at the foot of the cross, including Mary and Mary Magdalene, said, “He is dead.’

Word of the Week: Apology

“The apology that wasn’t” was the headline last week in an Atlantic magazine article regarding Joe Biden.

By now you’ve probably heard the former Vice-President has come under fire for his treatment of women. Pictures and video of Joe hugging, kissing, rubbing noses and smelling hair have blanketed the airwaves. It’s interesting that women are just now coming forward with their complaints and it’s making news. Continue reading

AIN’T ANYTHING MEANER THAN KILLIN’ BABIES

Rarely, if ever, in 7 years have we published an entire article from another author. Today’s post merits an exception. While we have addressed the issue of abortion several times, this well-written and deeply thought-provoking piece by my friend Kenny Chumbley offers a unique perspective and deserves wider circulation.

May it encourage and inspire you to say or do something to protect the most vulnerable among us.

Three Spiritual Lessons from the Jussie Smollett Case.

Even if you’re not a news junkie, by now you’ve probably heard about the Jussie Smollett story that has gone from hate crime to hoax.

Smollett, an actor on hit Fox TV show “Empire” claimed late last month he was attacked and assaulted by two masked men who shouted racist and homophobic slurs, saying “This is MAGA country.”

The African-American actor who is homosexual said the two men wrapped a noose around his neck and covered him in bleach. Apparently, Smollett also tried to mislead police about the suspects, claiming the area around one attacker’s eyes were white skinned. Continue reading

Count Your Blessings

“You had better count your blessings,” is a retort often given to someone who is feeling sorry for themselves, or who have experienced some “bad luck.”

What’s usually meant is be thankful for what you have instead of what you don’t have. It is then that we are often reminded that we still have good health, a loving family, and a roof over our heads. Or anything else that we can physically or materially name.

But is that all there is? Continue reading
