What Is Your Position In Life?

christ-centered-960x350

We may sometimes feel like the story Mark Smith told about his son in a Reader’s Digest article.

“Like many high school seniors, my son was filling out college-scholarship applications. One form asked for extracurricular activities.

He answered: “wrestling.”

The next question requested “positions held.” Continue reading

An Ignominious Anniversary

Since yesterday was the 44th anniversary of Roe v Wade, and January is “Right to Life” month, I am reposting this post from 2 years ago. Please pass it on.

ChooseLife.2

Today is the 42th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion. That epic decision has now left over 57 million babies dead. And many women scarred for life. Physically. Mentally. Emotionally. And Spiritually.

I agree with Norma McCorvey “I don’t think there is a good reason for an abortion….“It’s not your body, it’s not your choice, because you got that from God. He gave it to you.”

“Who’s Norma McCorvey?”  you ask.  “And what right does she have to say that?”

How To Live In A Divided Country

divided-america

“America is a sad place to live today,” posted one of my facebook friends, Jimmy Grushon, a long time friend and brother in Christ.

Jim laments, “The ideologies of politics have made people consumed in self and disrespectful of others who don’t view the world from their point of view. We are witnessing a society that hates more, is more hypocritical, more political, godless, more disrespectful and more self consumed than any time in my lifetime. “ Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: Luke 13:18-19

mustard-treeIt was on January 1, 2012, that ThePreachersWord entered the world of blogging with our first post. Now 5 years and 4 days later we are writing and publishing post #1400.

It was a small and obscure beginning. With no readers, no advance notice, no advertising and no professional platform we launched in faith that someone would notice. And hopefully read our little blog and recommend it to a friend. Continue reading

What Does The Bible Say About Gender Identity?

In 2016 issues surrounding “gender identity” became a hot topic. This April post was the most read new post for the year and received the 2nd most hits of all posts for 2016.

 Gender

Hannah Holloway says, “I never really thought to myself, yes, I am a girl.  Or, yes, I am a guy.  I’m Hannah.”

Hannah’s story along with several others was reported in Sunday’s Kansas City Star in the Arts and Culture section.  The Star devoted three full pages to the issue of gender identity. Hannah and others want to be classified as nonbinary.  So, she doesn’t want to be called by the pronoun “she” but the pronoun “they.”

Personal Reflections on the Passing of Harry Pickup, Jr.

The passing of one of my early preaching, mentors, Harry Pickup Jr, was the inspiration for this post, which was widely received by our readers. It was the 3rd most read in 2016.

ThePreachersWord's avatarThePreachersWord

Pickup HarryC. R. Nichol was one of the great preachers, teachers and religious writers of the late 19th and early 20th century.   He was known, not only for his scholarly work, but for his wisdom and quick wit.

One morning, while taking a walk, a friend cheerily greeted him, “Good morning, Bro. Nichol, I see that you’re still in the land of the living.”

Without missing a beat, he quickly quipped as he walk on, “No. I’m in the land of the dying. But I hope one day to go to the land of the living.”

7 Lessons Learned From Saul’s Flaws

We are down to the Final Four of our 12 days of reblogging. And there is a surprise entry. This 2013 post, which was not in the top 10 that year, has become the 4th most read post for 2016. You will be blessed by being reminded of these 7 great lessons from this flawed Bible character.

The BibleWe’ve been watching the History Channel’s presentation of The Bible from Executive Producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.  The reaction has been interesting.

Movie critics called it “fractious and overwrought,” “a further piece of evidence that drama and reverence don’t mix well,” and “a mini-series full of emoting that does not register emotionally.”

Predictability the Christian Post and similar news outlets have hailed The Bible as “awesome,” inspiring, and “spot on.”

The Welievers Are Moving

Our move this year from Kansas City to Texas was big news. At least for us. And our readers. This post, which explains the motivation behind the move, was the 5th most read in 2016. I also link an important post on Providence that you would enjoy reading.

West Main St Church

Fifty years ago I made the decision as a teenager to preach the Gospel of Christ. Although there have been various opportunities, interests and even the need on occasion to “make tents,” I’ve never wavered from my primary passion.

The commitment to preach has taken Norma Jean and me to many cities and states throughout the years–from Maine to California. And even a mission trip to Kazakstan. We have lived and engaged in located work in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and now Missouri. I have tried to approach what I might do and where I would live based on the exhortation in James 4:13-17.

7 Things Christians Should Remember In An Election Year

This week we continue to reblog the top 12 most read posts in 2016. Little did we know in January the extent to which this post was needed. It was reposted hundreds of times on facebook and ranked #6 for 2016

Election 2016

“I’m fed up with politics.” I wearily commented to Norma Jean the other night after being fed more political baloney.

Then what did I do about it?

I tuned in last night to watch the Republican debate. Yes, another one! At one point during an exchange of charges and counter charges over their record and positions on the issues, Norma Jean turned to me and asked, “How do you know who is right!?

PraiseTheLord.2

“Praise the LORD” is the beginning phrase of Pslams 146-150.  Thirty-nine times in these five  Psalms he uses the word “praise” in reference to the LORD.  This has been a frequent theme of the Psalmist.  And it should be a frequent, yes a daily occurrence in our lives.  These Psalms speak of at least seven ways that we Him .
