John 19:38-42, A Secret Disciple

Years ago, a Christian businessman attended the funeral of a coworker he had known for many years. As the service went on, the preacher spoke warmly about the deceased man’s faith — how he had been a devoted follower of Christ, faithful in prayer, active in his church, and generous to those in need. Continue reading

John 14:1-3, The Father’s House

Tobin Perry was a Missionary in India for 2 years. He wrote about missing home. But it wasn’t so much the physical distance, or even the food, though he did miss McDonald’s. But it was the societal rules, the different customs, the values that were hard to understand. Continue reading

John 7, Who is this Man?

Our passage presents a vivid picture of diverse opinions regarding who Jesus was.

The occasion is the Feast of Tabernacles, a festive and jubilant time for the Jews, who celebrated God’s providential care for their forefathers who wandered in the wilderness for 40 years. The reactions of various people to Jesus can be summarized in three words, as suggested by Warren Wiersbe: Disbelief. Debate. Division. Continue reading

Hebrews 2:1, 4 Warning Signs You May Be Drifting from Your Faith

“People do not drift toward Holiness,” wrote D. A. Carson.” We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith.”

Dr. Carson is right. Faith doesn’t dissipate overnight or in a single moment. It gradually slips and drifts. Unintentionally and accidentally.

For this reason, the Bible urges Believers to “pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it” (Heb. 2:1) Continue reading

2 Peter 1:1-4, Precious Faith

When our daughter  Rachél was a little girl, I began calling her “Little Precious.” The moniker stuck, and even as an adult, she often signs a card or note to me on a special occasion as either “Little Precious” or “L. P.”

We call people precious who are important to us. It speaks to their value, worth, and the feelings we have for them. Continue reading

Psalm 77, From Despair to Hope

In the December 2, 2024, issue of Christianity Today, Caresse Spencer shares how she destroyed her faith in pursuit of her “best life” during the pandemic.

With her life falling apart and her faith crumbling, Careese said she typed a two-word expletive, cursing God, and resigned from Christianity. Continue reading

2 Corinthians 3:2-3, Living Letters for Christ

Imagine a man commuting to work on the train every morning.

He sits in the same seat, often surrounded by the same group of people. He never preaches a sermon or hands out Bible tracts, but over time, his fellow passengers notice something about him. He’s patient when the train is delayed, kind to the conductor, and quick to give up his seat to someone who needs it. Continue reading

1 Corinthians 15:58–Living in the Power of the Resurrection

As football begins, I’m reminded of the story of Johnny, who loved playing sandlot football, but was just a scrawny, little kid and a bench warmer on his high school team.

Johnny’s chance came when the first-string quarterback broke his ankle, and he became a starter. His dream was to play college football at Notre Dame, but he was rejected. The University of Pittsburgh offered him a scholarship, but he failed the entrance exam. Finally, the University of Louisville offered him a scholarship. Continue reading

1 Corinthians 1:1-3, The Christian’s Calling

“Outside St. James Church in Shere, England, you will find a metal plaque marking the site of the cell of Christine Carpenter, Anchoress of Shere 1329,” according to a post in PreachingToday.com.

Psalm 19:14–Watching the Words of Your Heart

I remember as a kid, during summer vacation, going down to the country, as we say in Indiana. That meant Kentucky. It meant staying with my Papaw and Granny Key in Grayson County.

They didn’t have indoor plumbing or air-conditioning, but we never minded. We had a ball. One of the unique experiences for a kid was seeing how they drew water from a well. They lowered a bucket down into the well, which drew its water from an underground spring. That water was cold, pure, and better tasting than city water. Continue reading
