IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Oh, What A Savior!

Politicians weren’t the only ones seeking attention at the Republican and Democratic National conventions.  American Atheists were trying to arrest the attention of Mitt Romney, Barack Obama and their faithful followers.  Specially prepared billboards mocking Christianity by calling God “sadistic” and Jesus a “useless” Savior with the image of Jesus on toast, and hailing atheism as “Simply Reasonable” were to appear in both Tampa and Charlotte.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Weathering the Storm

Even though we are 1248 miles away, we were watching.  Waiting. Wondering. Would tropical storm Isaac become a hurricane?  Would it hit Tampa?   What would happen if Tampa took a direct hit?  How severe would it be?  And why did we care from so far away? Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Anguish

Strange. Startling.  Shocking.  All of these words and more describe this plaintive cry of Christ from the cross.  They are unsettling.  They confound us.  They even appall us.  What were they?  Continue reading

Do You Know Why They Died?

Alexander Teves.  John Larimer. Matthew McQuinn. Jon Blunk.  You’ve probably seen the names of these men, but may not recognize who they are.  They were among the 12 that were murdered in the movie massacre in Aurora, Colorado, last week.  But it is how they died that makes their story touching and unique. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Words of Forgiveness

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him” (Jn 1:11).  Some of the saddest words in the Bible.

God became man.  He gave up the riches of heaven.  He humbled himself.  He lived among men.  As a man.  He was tired.  Hungry.  Thirsty. He suffered.  He was tempted. Yet without sin.  He was man.  Continue reading

Real Freedom

Freedom.  It’s word that swells with emotion within our hearts.  Freedom is synonymous  with America.  The Flag.  July 4th. Fireworks.

Freedom speaks of the state of independence.Liberty.  And a lack of restrictions. It is an opportunity to exercise one’s rights.  To pursue your dreams.  To fulfill your spirit’s longing. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Anchor Points for Life.

Hurricane season is in full force.  I don’t expect it to affect us much in Kansas!  But I have friends and family in Florida, so I’ll still be alert to the forecast.  A good sailor will tell you, “Don’t tie your boat to the land.  You’ll regret it, if you do.  Your only hope is to anchor deep. Leave some slack in the rope.  And hope for the best!”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! From Ordinary to Extraordinary

To the casual observer there was nothing unusual about these six hours.

To the casual observer this Friday was a normal Friday. Six hours of routine. Six hours of the expected.

Six hours. One Friday. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Turning Grief to Joy

When the Passover feast ended, and Jesus and taught the lesson on humility and ministry through washing the disciples feet, they began walking across the Kedron valley to the Garden of Gethsemane.  As Thursday turned into Friday the disciples hearts became heavy. Mournful.  Plaintive.  Jesus knew and understood their sadness.  And so he encouraged them, “let not your hearts be troubled.” Continue reading

What Do You Know?

Leon Mauldin tells about seeing a message on a church marquee that read:  “A church with few answers, many questions, but great faith.”  On the surface that sounds good.  It sounds humble.  Here is a church open, willing to consider everything from a fresh perspective.  A church not rigid, not bound by traditionalism.  Continue reading
