IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! 3 Lessons From 3 Crosses

Crosses.3

Crosses.  You see them everywhere.  On houses of worship.  On grave markers. As ornate pieces of jewelry worn as a necklace, bracelet or even earrings.

We celebrate the cross. We glamorize it.  We even romanticize it. We all know what it means.  It’s the symbol of Christianity. It represents salvation. It reminds us of Jesus.

Yet the cross was used by the Romans as a cruel means of capital punishment.  It was a shameful death.  A humiliating death.  A painful death.

On that Friday Jesus was crucified there were two other crosses. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! He Emptied Himself

Jesus.Collage

The story is told about a famous SEC football coach, who was on vacation with his family in a remote area of the Northwest.

One night they decided to go into the little town to see a movie.  When they walked into a theater and sat down, the handful of people applauded. Proudly he thought to himself, “I can’t believe it. People recognize me all the way up here.”  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Testimony of Tears

TEARS.JESUSI can vividly recall my Mom taking communion on Sunday.  I was just a child.  But as I sat next to her I could see tears well up in her eyes.  I could sense the emotion.  I didn’t understand it as a kid, but I knew it was a serious and solemn time.

Tears testify to human emotions.  In times of sadness, suffering, and sorrow.  Tears speak when words fail us.  They convey compassion.  They express the yearning of the Heart.  They communicate the state of the spirit.  They reveal the innermost soul of a person. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Passover Lamb Sacrificed For Us

passover2

On the night before Jesus’ crucifixion, 13 men ate the Passover supper. During the meal Jesus gave them a glimpse into his impeding death through the institution of His own memorial supper. Ironic!  He who ate the Passover was about to become the Passover!  Smitten. Slain. Sacrificed.  His blood was shed.

The Bible says, “Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Cor 5:7) Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! The Incomparable Christ

JesusChrist

Billy Sunday, who was a popular National League baseball player in the 1880’s became a celebrated and influential evangelist in the first two decades of the 20th century.

Sunday’s preaching style was often described as colloquial and homespun. His frenetic delivery attracted large crowds to his campaigns in some of America’s largest cities. He was a conservative who espoused fundamental beliefs about the inerrancy of Scripture, the virgin birth of Jesus and the bodily resurrection.

In one of his famous sermons exalting the all sufficiency of Jesus Christ, Billy Sunday paid tribute to the Savior with these words. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! When the Rocks Gave Witness

RocksSplit

Recently Norma Jean and I were in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where Don Patton preaches. His wife, Zynda, gave us a brief “tour” of his in home museum of archaeological discoveries in his journeys to Biblical lands.

Looking at the various rocks, fossils and artifacts that are 2000-4000 years old is fascinating. They each have a story to tell. A record to relate. And a testimony to the accuracy of Scripture.

What if those rocks could literally talk! What an incredible chronicle of history that would be! However, I am reminded of a time when Jesus advanced this idea, if not in reality, at least in hyperbole. Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Who Crucified Christ?

Christ.Crucified

Who was responsible for crucifying Christ?

That question has been debated by theologians, historians, preachers and Christians throughout the ages. Some may think the question is irrelevant after 2000 years. “What difference does it make,” they opine?

However, the issue of Christ’s crucifixion may have greater implications to us today than we initially realized.  Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Jesus Death: A Judicial Necessity

cross-and-gavel

“I had committed the crime and I stood before the judge as he pronounced the verdict.”

“Guilty!

“Now I awaited the sentence. I so desired mercy. But I knew that I was indeed guilty and had no reason to expect anything except justice. Then the judge pronounced the sentence.” Continue reading

IT’S FRIDAY. BUT SUNDAY’S COMING! Every Scar Tells A Story

jesus_hands

“I have some great stories that in many ways are the result of pain in my life” says John Harvey, a preacher from Palm City, Florida.

One day John was sitting with his kids when one of them asked about a set of scars on his legs. “Right around my right kneecap,” John says, “there is this interesting series of little scars that form a triangle, My kids wanted to know what they were from. So I was able to tell them how I played third base in a baseball game instead of catching. There was a play at the base where a runner slid into my leg as I tried to apply the tag. The scars on my knee form the exact imprint of where the spikes from his cleats went into my leg.”

Then Harvey makes this powerful point: Continue reading
