Great Verses of the Bible: Hebrews 4:16

C. S. Lewis from his book, “God in the Dock, offers this interesting bit of dialogue regarding prayer.

“Praying for particular things,” said I, “always seems to me like advising God how to run the world. Wouldn’t it be wiser to assume that He knows best?”

“On the same principle,” said he, “I suppose you never ask a man next to you to pass the salt, because God knows best whether you ought to have salt or not. And I suppose you never take an umbrella, because God knows best whether you ought to be wet or dry.” Continue reading →

Great Verses of the Bible: Galatians 1:6-7

Several years ago the cable television mogul Ted Turner spoke at a banquet in Orlando where he was given an award by the American Humanist Association. During his acceptance speech, he criticized fundamentalist Christianity.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Turner saying that Jesus would probably “be sick at his stomach” over the way his ideas have been “twisted.” Continue reading →

This is the time of year we are beginning t0 receive tax forms from various financial entities. It reminds us that April 15 is coming, to get our records together and file our income taxes. And then pay up!

Great Verses of The Bible:Mark 10:43-44

During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers repairing a small defensive barrier. Their leader was shouting instructions, but making no attempt to help them.

Asked why by the rider, he retorted with great dignity, “Sir, I am a corporal!” The stranger apologized, dismounted, and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers. Continue reading →

I love this time of year as the Christmas season extends into the new year. Everyone seems happier. More joyful. Everywhere you go “Happy New Year” greetings are exchanged.

“Happy New Year” is more than a trite expression. It has substance. Reality. And meaning. The calendar is new. New plans are made for the coming months ahead. New incentives, goals, and plans are formalized by businesses. The sports world will crown new champions in 2018. And students begin a new academic year with a fresh start. Continue reading →

I read the other day that Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has passed Bill Gates as the richest man in the United States with wealth exceeding $100 Billion.

Suppose Bezos decided to deposit $86,000 every day in your bank account. But with one stipulation. You couldn’t carry over any balance to the next day. You had to spend it, invest it or give it away. You couldn’t let it sit idle in the bank. What would you do? Continue reading →

Great Verses of the Bible: 1Thessalonians 5:18

 

Matthew Henry was a well-known British Bible scholar and Preacher who lived from 1662 to 1714. His commentaries on the Old and New Testaments are still in print today.

One day, Dr. Henry was riding his horse on the way to a church meeting where he was the guest speaker. As he journeyed through the dense forest, a masked bandit suddenly appeared with a gun. He demanded that Henry dismount and hand over all of his money. Fearing for his life, he quickly complied as the robber returned into the woods. Continue reading →

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 18:6

When tragedy strikes Americans from diverse backgrounds, opposing political views and various religious beliefs seem to come together. Even if it’s for a short period of time.

Yet on Sunday morning when a deranged gunman opened fire in a place of worship in Sutherland Springs, Texas, killing 26 people and wounding 20 others, there has been an attitude of indignation directed toward people of faith.

While well-intentioned people expressed their “thoughts and prayers” for the community and the victims of Sutherland Springs, Twitter and other social media exploded with derisive comments. A few examples. Continue reading →

Great Verses of the Bible: Psalm 51:1-2

Kent and Barbara Hughes, in their book on ministry, tell of a gifted young preacher who had experienced an overwhelming failure in his ministry.

He borrowed a pickup truck and wheeled in the church parking lot. Everyone watched as he backed across the church lawn to his study door. Refusing any assistance from the members and without any comments, he began emptying his office upon the truck bed. First, he emptied the content of his desk draws. Then His files.
