GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Proverbs 4:23

Proverbs 4.23

Remember Steve Irwin? The Crocodile Hunter? He lived life on the edge. And his shows were exciting to watch. Do you recall how he died?

Many people thought a crocodile would finally take his life, or at least claim a limb. Irwin survived many dangers. Countless snake bites. Being chased up a tree by a deadly Komodo dragon. Spat on by a red spitting cobra. And being pulled into the water by a massive crocodile. But none of those claimed his life. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 55:22

Psalms

Little Ethan had a habit of “stretching the truth.”

One day, while walking home from school, he saw a large black dog run across the street right in front of him.   He rushed home as fast as he could and hollered, “Mom! You’re never going to believe .what I just saw!”

“What did you see Ethan?” his mother cautiously asked, Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 46:1

Psalm46.1

In 1517 Martin Luther was just an obscure, unknown Catholic priest. Until.

Until he decided to challenge the teachings of the Catholic church when he nailed his 95 theses on the church house door in Wittenberg, Germany.  Luther challenged the church on 95 points where he felt they were scripturally wrong. This opposition meant a charge of heresy and certain excommunication. It could have resulted in torture and death. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Luke 5:32

Bible.Cross.2

The other night, Norma Jean and I watched one of our favorite movies again, The Blind Side starring Sandra Bullock, who portrayed Leigh Ann Tuohy.

This awe-inspiring film tells the story of the Tuohy family who took in a homeless young man, Michael Oher, and gave him the chance to reach his God-given potential. Oher not only dodged the hopelessness of his dysfunctional inner city upbringing, but became the first-round NFL draft pick for the Baltimore Ravens in 2009. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Psalm 119:105

Bible.Light.Ps119

In his lecture yesterday at Florida College, Jason Hardin told the ancient story of The Blind Men and the Elephant.  It goes something like this.

Each man touches a part of the elephant and draws his own conclusion of what an elephant is like.

The first blind man put out his hand and touched the side of the elephant. “How smooth! An elephant is like a wall.”

The second blind man extended his hand and felt the elephant’s trunk. “How round! An elephant is like a snake.”

”The third  blind man touched the leg of the elephant. “How tall! An elephant is like a tree.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Romans 8:28

romans 8 28

There’s an ancient fable about an African King who had a close friend. The friend had a habit of looking at every situation in his life, positive or negative, and saying, “This is good! God knows best!”

One day the King and his friend were out on a hunting expedition. The friend would load and prepare the guns for the King. The friend made a mistake in preparing one of the guns, so when the King fired it, the gun exploded and his thumb was blown off. Examining the situation, the friend remarked as usual, “This is good! God knows best!” That made the King furious. “No, this is not good!” He then ordered the soldiers to put his friend in jail. Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: John 14:6

John14.4

In his classic book, Mere Christianity, the great British writer, C. S. Lewis, makes this bold and challenging statement about Jesus.

“A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher; he’d either be a lunatic — on a level with a man who says he’s a poached egg — or else he’d be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse.”  Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus.Bible

Dr. Richard Swenson is a physician and a futurist, who wrote a 1990’s book entitled, “Margin.” He describes modern society as harried, hassled, and overloaded with no room left for rest.

Dr Swenson observes, “Overload is not having time to finish the book you’re reading on stress. Margin is having time to read it twice. Overload is fatigue. Margin is energy. Overload is red ink. Margin is black ink. Overload is hurry. Margin is calm. Overload is anxiety. Margin is security. Overload is a disease of our day. Margin is the cure. I agree with much of his book as it applies to schedules, commitments and balance in the stress of daily living. There is some excellent advice offered. And even an acknowledgment of understanding God’s purpose for our lives.   But there is a bigger problem. And the need for a greater cure. A doctor is needed. But it is the Great Physician.  Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Hebrews 11:1

Hebrews11.1

Everyone has faith. Faith in something. Or faith in someone. A Houston preacher, John Bisagno, put it this way:

“Faith is the heart of life. You go to a doctor whose name you can’t pronounce. He gives you a prescription you cannot read. You take it to a pharmacist you have never seen. He gives you medication you do not understand — and yet, you take it.” Continue reading

GREAT VERSES OF THE BIBLE: Acts 20:35

Giving

Have you heard about the 90-year-old lady who decided buying Christmas gifts was a bit too stressful?

However, she wanted to give her family and friends something.  So she decided to write out a check for everyone and include it in her Christmas card.  With a personal note wishing each a “Merry Christmas” she added, “Buy your own Christmas present this year.”  Signed her name. And sent them off.  Continue reading
