Is God A Mass Murderer?

Noah.Ark2

Bill Maher, host of HBO’s “Real Time,” recently spouted “this is a stupid country” because 60% of Americans believe in the Biblical narrative of Noah.

Regarding the upcoming movie “Noah”, Maher ranted that the Bible  story was false and “immoral.”  “It’s about a psychotic mass murderer who gets away with it and his name is God,” declared the avowed atheist.   Continue reading

Near to the Heart of God

IMG_0820

Cleland McAfee was a preacher and song writer from Parkville, Mo,.  He lived in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  He was known for often writing his own songs that fit the theme of a sermon he was preaching.  In 1903 he suffered the tragic loss of two infant nieces to diphtheria.

His daughter, in her book Near to the Heart of God, describes what happened. Continue reading

How Can I Know God’s Will?

GodsWill

I was talking to a lady last week who was being evicted from her apartment.  She  expected the Judge to evict her in three days.  However, to her surprise,  she was given two weeks.

She suggested to me that it was God’s will.  God gave her an extra two weeks.  I’m not so sure that apartment manager thought it was the will of God for this woman to get two months of free rent! Continue reading

Searching The Depths!

HolySpiritOn this day in history 83 years ago William Beebe set a record.  On June 11, 1930, Beebe dove to a record-setting depth of 1,426 feet off the coast of Bermuda. He used a diving chamber, invented by Otis Barton,  called a bathysphere.

This caught my eye because of the derivation of the word “bathysphere.”  It’s a compound word. The first part comes from the Greek word “bathos” which means deep.   It’s used by Paul in explaining the revelation of God’s Word by the Holy Spirit.  Continue reading

AWESOME!

Awesome.MoonFriday night Norma Jean and I joined several friends from our Hickman church family for a meal in Overland  Park, Kansas, at a restaurant called Wil Jenny’s.  It was our first visit there.  In fact, I had never heard of it.  So, trying to get some recommendations, I asked the server about two or three menu items.   Naturally he said they were all good.  But then he surprised me by saying, “The meal loaf is awesome!”  Really? Nine Attributes of the Almighty

God.KnowingGod“What, in your opinion, is the greatest spiritual need in the world today?”  How would you answer that question?

Dr. R.C. Sproul, the noted author, philosopher and theologian, was asked that question in a conference of religious leaders.  Bill Hybels, in his book  “The God You’re Looking For,” was there and relates what happened. Continue reading

What’s Your View of God?

Touching EarthA few years ago sociologists from Baylor’s Institute for Studies of Religion  did a study about our view of God.  The title of the research paper was called “The Values and Beliefs of the American Public.”  It was the result of a survey done by Gallup for Baylor University.

In response to 77 questions, the study identified four distinct images that people have of God’s personality and attitude toward the human race. The research claimed this study may “tell more about people’s social, moral and political views and personal piety than the familiar categories of Protestant, Catholic, Jew, or even red and blue states.”  Continue reading

Can You See God?

FishingJohnny approached his older sister, Suzie, with a serious question.  “Suzie, can anybody ever really see God?” Occupied with other things, Suzie tersely responded: “Of course not, silly. God is so far up in heaven that nobody can see him.”

Time passed, but Johnny’s question still puzzled him.   One day he approached his mother: “Mom, can anybody ever really see God?” Gently she replied, “No, not really. God is a spirit.  He dwells in our hearts.  But….we can never really see him.”  The answer satisfied Johnny somewhat,  but he still wondered. Continue reading

What Does God See in the Dark Corners of Your Life?

Someone has written a humorous piece about what some mothers of famous people could have said:

MONA LISA’S MOTHER: “After all that money your father and I spent on braces, Mona, that’s the biggest smile you can give us?”

JONAH’S MOTHER: “That’s a nice story, but now tell me where you’ve really been for the last three days.”

HUMPTY DUMPTY’S MOTHER: “Humpty, if I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a hundred times not to sit on that wall. But would you listen to me? Noooo!” Continue reading

What I Saw From My Deck

I was sitting in the basement watching “The Five.”  My Dell notebook on my lap. A glass of Pepsi and some chips by my side.  As I thought about today’s post, my ruminations were interrupted when Norma Jean came down stairs and said, “Come up and sit on the deck!”

“I can’t. I  need to write my blog for tomorrow,” I replied. Continue reading
