Some Reflections on the Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II

Yesterday I joined an estimated 7 billion people around the world who watched at least portions of the Queen’s funeral.

Watching the pomp and pageantry unfolding beneath the magnificent gothic arches of Westminster Abbey, a myriad of thoughts and feelings swirled around within me. Continue reading

Hebrews 9:27-28

Cal Thomas, related in a recent post watching BBC and the Sky News coverage of Queen Elizabeth’s death. Thomas admitted he was surprised by two things.

“The first is that so many people interviewed were shocked at the Queen’s death.”

“Why should they be shocked?” Thomas wondered. “She was 96 years old and in failing health.” Continue reading

How to Grow in Godliness?

Thomas Monaghan,  the founder of Domino’s Pizza and its CEO from 1970 to 1985 grew a small debt ridden business to what is today the largest Pizza chain in the world with sales exceeding 8.6 billion dollars in 2021.

Once asked to account for the incredible growth of the company, Monaghan explained,  “I programed everything for growth. Everyday we develop people–the key to growth is developing people, not special cheese, not tasty crust, not fast delivery, but people.  People are the key to all effective leadership.” Continue reading

Applications of Godliness

“The key to godliness is not more knowledge,” opined Woodrow Knoll, “but more obedience.”

Indeed, godliness issues itself in following Jesus, daily bearing His cross, and willingly submitting to His commands (Lk. 9:23).  Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (Jn 14:15). The beloved John further amplified that fact when he wrote, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome” (1Jn. 5:3).  Continue reading

What is the Source of Godliness?

“If ideas have consequences, and they clearly do, the most consequential of all our ideas is the idea of God,” opined Gary Henry in his daybook Enthusiastic Ideas. “Nowhere does life ask us any more basic question, than when it asks us what we’re going to believe about God.”

Gary then argues that (1) if we are open to the idea that God exists, and (2) we accept the truth about God and make a commitment to Him, then this knowledge and belief should translate into a godly life. Continue reading

What’s On Your Mind?

“What’s on your mind,” is the first question you see when you log onto your facebook page?

You are provided with a convenient box to post what you want to share. However, there are some options. You can post something public for everyone to see. Or you can post a thought that only those on your friends’ list will see. Or you can exclude certain friends from seeing what you post. Continue reading

Word of the Week: Persevere

While on our annual anniversary blogging break last week, I enjoyed reading two books. Both about running.

The first, “Lessons Learned on the Run,” by David Kempston, a trial lawyer who is a self-described “middle of the pack runner.” Kempston’s book was a joy to read as he related how the “sport embodies life.”

Kempston observed that running “requires effort and endurance.” It teaches one to push on through adversity and trials, through both victory and defeat Continue reading

Winning Even When You Lose

“Some things are bigger than sports,” correctly opined David Suggs in sportingnews.com.

We were reminded of this fact (again) as a dramatic, and scary scene unfolded in the first inning during a Little League regional tournament game in Waco, Texas, Tuesday.

With 2 on and 2 out, Texas East pitcher Kaiden Shelton lost grip of a fastball and hit Oklahoma batter, Isaiah Jarvis, on the helmet. Jarvin fell to the ground, clutching his head, as concerned coaches rushed to his aid. Continue reading

Practicing What We Profess

According to multiple news outlets, Vice President Kamala Harris has received criticism and “sparked pushback” regarding people of faith supporting abortion.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court striking down the constitutionality of Roe v Wade, our elected leaders, as well as the liberal news media are trying to garner support for abortion.

Speaking to the NAACP national convention in Atlantic City, N. J. Harris opined again on this issue saying people don’t have to “abandon” their faith in order to support legalized abortion. Later in the day, she made similar remarks regarding “reproductive rights” at a roundtable discussion with New Jersey State legislators. Continue reading

Compartmentalizing Your Christianity

Author, blogger, and evangelical speaker Paul Tripp offers this unusual challenge.

“The next time you’re standing in your kitchen, bedroom, or at your desk, I want you to look at drawers. Yes, drawers. The place where you store cutlery, clothes, or staplers and pens.”

Tripp then makes the point that too often we compartmentalize our lives like we neatly organize our dresser or kitchen drawers, separating our stuff into various categories. Continue reading
