10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry

On this day in history, April 6th, the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympics was reborn in Athens at the Panathenaic Stadium.

When we were in Athens several years ago, Norma Jean and I visited the Stadium, the only one in the world built entirely of marble. It was originally built in the 4th century B.C. Rebuilt in 144 B.C. Then excavated in 1869, and hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896.

When we visited, I wondered if the apostle Paul might have visited this Stadium. As he walked around Athens, seeing the many monuments erected in honor of their gods, it’s both possible and probable. Continue reading →

Weekly Recap: March 27-31

On Tuesday WordPress informed me that our post “3 Lessons From March Madness” was #3300.

If you had given me an assignment on January 1, 2012 to write 3300 articles, I might have thrown up my hands and said, “I’ll never get that done.”  But here we are.  Eleven years and three month later. Little by little. Day by Day.  One post at a time.  I think there’s a lesson in there for all of us.  Our daily efforts and activities can add up over time to make a big difference. 3 Lessons From March Madness

We’re nearing the end of my favorite three weeks of the year–March Madness. You probably don’t even have to be a sports fan to know March Madness is the moniker for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

This year has been madnesses personified. This year’s final four are San Diego State. Florida Atlantic University. Miami, And University of Connecticut. Only UConn has been here before.

Disagreement is Not Hate

Since I’m not a hockey fan, I was unaware until this morning that Canadian goalie James Reimer who plays for the San Jose Sharks had made news over the weekend.

What did he do?

Cancel Spring Break?

That’s what the Mayor of Miami, Florida wants to do–cancel Spring break.

The Mayor called for a ban after a violent weekend that ended with two fatal shootings and “excessively large and unruly crowds” as reported by several media outlets.

Reacting to the chaos on Monday morning, Mayor Dan Gelber said: “We haven’t asked for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city. It’s too rowdy, brings too much disorder and is simply too difficult to police. Continue reading →

Get Over It

Today, March 9th is National Get Over It Day, according to the National Day Calendar of unusual holidays.

Jeff Goldblatt, an entrepreneur from Atlanta, George, created this day when he was struggling to get over a romantic breakup. He even wrote a poem and began a website to promote this day.
