Attitudes. Actions. And Feelings.

On the John Maxwell leadership facebook page is this important reminder from one of his colleagues.

“Attitude plays a crucial role in shaping our emotional responses to different situations. The way we react to events and circumstances is largely influenced by our attitude towards them.”

The author, who I believe is Chris Robinson, speaks to the issue of our feelings as it relates to both our attitude as well as our actions. Continue reading

Trading Bitterness for Compassion

In the syndicated advice column, Ask Amy, by Amy Dickinson, a woman wrote asking how to shake off the resentment she felt. She signed her name “Bitter.”

Her husband was diagnosed with ALS at age 67. During that time his brother attended their granddaughter’s graduation party, got drunk and hit her car as he was leaving. Yet failed to tell anyone about the accident Continue reading

A Stubborn Faith

Last week the well known Baptist preacher, Dr. Charles Stanley, died at age 90.

Christianity Today announced his passing with this headline: “Died: Charles Stanley, In Touch Preacher Who Led with Stubborn Faith.”

The description “stubborn faith” grabbed my attention and prompted reflection. It was not meant as a criticism, but a compliment. Stanley was well known both within his denomination and without as a conservative Continue reading

Negative Effects of Religious Hypocrisy

Past negative experiences with professed Christians and/or religious institutions by religious people are cited as the top reasons why people question Christianity.

This March report released by Barna Research found both religious people, as well as those who claimed no faith were the most affected by religious hypocrisy. Continue reading

Staying Alive in a Dead Church

Ross Sams, Jr. shared this true story about a neighbor’s cat that was run over by car.

When the mother was told of the accident she quickly disposed of the remains before her four year old son, Billy, found about it.

After a few days, though, Billy finally asked about the cat.

“Billy, the cat died,” his mother explained. “But it’s all right. He’s up in heaven with God.” Continue reading

Weekly Recap: April 3-7

Greetings from Beverly Hills, FL

Norma Jean and I are preparing to leave for Miami, where I will be preaching in a meeting for the Carol City Church, April 9-14.  It’s one of the few week long meetings I do with 8 lessons, If you’re within driving distance, we’d love to see you.

Today’s post is a recap of the past week with its live links, provided in case you may have missed a post.

I don’t know about my fellow bloggers, but I often post something that I think should receive more hits than it does.  This week the #1 most read post was Psalm 71, followed by Discovering Purpose Beyond Yourself.  Coming in third was 10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry, which I thought would be a runaway #1 in terms of reader views.  So, many of you missed it.  I hope you will read it. And share it. Continue reading

10 Questions To Detect Sports Idolatry

On this day in history, April 6th, the ancient Greek tradition of the Olympics was reborn in Athens at the Panathenaic Stadium.

When we were in Athens several years ago, Norma Jean and I visited the Stadium, the only one in the world built entirely of marble. It was originally built in the 4th century B.C. Rebuilt in 144 B.C. Then excavated in 1869, and hosted the first modern Olympics in 1896.

When we visited, I wondered if the apostle Paul might have visited this Stadium. As he walked around Athens, seeing the many monuments erected in honor of their gods, it’s both possible and probable. Continue reading

Discovering Purpose Beyond Yourself

I recently came across an old Calvin and Hobbes cartoon that went like this.

Calvin: I’m at peace with the world and I’m completely serene.

Hobbes: Why is that?

Calvin: Because I’ve discovered my purpose in life. I know why I was put here and why everything exists. Continue reading

Weekly Recap: March 27-31

Greetings from Beverly Hills, Florida

On Tuesday WordPress informed me that our post “3 Lessons From March Madness” was #3300.

If you had given me an assignment on January 1, 2012 to write 3300 articles, I might have thrown up my hands and said, “I’ll never get that done.”  But here we are.  Eleven years and three month later. Little by little. Day by Day.  One post at a time.  I think there’s a lesson in there for all of us.  Our daily efforts and activities can add up over time to make a big difference. Continue reading
