Polycarp was a second century Christian who lived at the time of Roman persecution.
This godly man, one of the bishops of the church at Smyrna, managed to escape persecution for almost his entire life. However, at age 86, he was suddenly a target of the Roman government.
Friends urged him to flee and go into hiding. Polycarp refused. When the soldiers came to his door, he let them in and said, “God’s will be done.” Historians record that he was brought before the local proconsul, Statius Quadratus, who interrogated him in front of a curious crowd of bystanders. Similar ads ran in last year’s Super Bowl. And they have been occasionally run throughout the year.

Norma Jean and I have been here all week attending the Florida College Lectures.
FC is a special place for us. It is my alma mater. We met here. Married while a student here. Both of our children attended FC. And later Norma Jean worked here for 10 years.
But what makes FC so special. Is the people. The relationships we’ve developed and have nurtured and nourished in the past 50 years. I’ve been blessed to have attended every Lecture program since my senior year in High School in 1966. Continue reading
