Are You Living a Balanced Christian Life?

My friend, former Florida College classmate, and fellow preaching colleague, Steve Wolfgang, posted a comment to Monday’s blog “Just Be Nice.”  He writes,

Thanks, Ken, for a very needful “challenge!” Sometimes it is all too easy to let life’s daily grit abrade our spirits and make us cranky, petulant, and impolite — whether with strangers, Christians, or even our families. Continue reading

Who Says So?

What do you say when you talk to yourself?  Come on!  Admit it!  You know you do.  We all do.  We are constantly talking to ourselves.  Thinking.  Imagining.  Reflecting.  Telling ourselves what we want to hear.  Continue reading

Getting Rid of Excess Baggage

The movers are coming in four weeks to load our earthly possessions and take us to Kansas City, Missouri.  For the past couple of weeks we have been going through stuff.  Sorting. Separating. Discarding. Keeping. Leaving.  You name it!   Continue reading

Did Jesus Pay Taxes?

Is it just me, or does it seem like Christians grumble a lot about paying taxes?

With recent news accounts about government waste, extravagant trips and questionable expenditures  of our tax money, it does make paying taxes a bit distasteful at times.

But what would Jesus do?  Did Jesus pay taxes?  Continue reading

The Unsinkable Ship

Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell was a second class passenger on the Titanic.  One of the few that lived to recall that dreadful night on April 15, 1912. She marveled at the majesty of the great ship as she boarded and asked a deck hand, “Is this ship really unsinkable?”  To which he replied, “Yes, lady, God himself could not sink this ship.”

Are You Gettin’ Better?

Baseball has begun.  So it must be Spring!  And how about those Tampa Bay Rays beginning the season with a 3-0 sweep of the Yankees?!

One of my favorite baseball stories involves famed St. Louis Cardinal pitcher, Dizzy Dean, a member of the so-called “gas-house gang.”  In 1934 Dizzy had a 30-7 record.  He led the league in strike-outs.  Led the league in shutouts.  And won two games in the World Series, including the deciding seventh game to beat the Detroit Tigers.  He was named MVP in 1934.  Continue reading

Wanna Fight About It?

For sports fans March Madness is a great time of year.  Basketball played at its highest level. Close wins.  Exciting upsets. Fierce rivalries.    This Saturday could feature all of the above in match up between bitter rivals Kentucky and Louisville.  But things are already heating up in the Bluegrass State between their respective fans. Continue reading

Have You Figured Out Your Future?

So, how are your brackets looking?

You know the one where you predicted Duke and Missouri to be in the Final Four of the NCAA basketball tournament?  Or for Michigan State to win it all?  What happened to your Cinderella teams!  Continue reading

“It’s the Garden of Eden All Over Again”

When you’re in college, Spring Break is the ultimate in week-long partying (for us it was, at least). Those seven days or so are reserved for drinking, sun tanning, dancing, and you know, um, making out. But sometimes, things can get really raunchy — think Girls Gone Wild, but without Joe Francis and his camera crew breathing uncomfortably down your neck. If you wanna hit the hottest parties this coming Spring, you’re going to need to book now — and these four spots are perfect for stripping down, boozing hard, and getting your freak on. Continue reading

Draw Near to God

“Lord be with us…” is an expression we often hear in public prayers.  Sometimes it’s prayed as it relates to our family.  Or in a closing prayer as we leave the assembly.  Or in our daily Christian walk.  I’ve also heard it applied to our services.  “Lord be with us as we worship today.” Continue reading
