What Christians Can Do During Civil Unrest?

“Close call.” Posted my friend and former college classmate Nancy (Clendening) Reaves.

Saturday evening, Nancy and her husband, Brownie, a preaching colleague of mine, were driving through Atlanta. Suddenly, Nancy, recounted, “A young black man ran out onto Hwy 85 intending to harm whoever was in the next car. It. Was. Me. He threw a big rock at my car window. Brownie was driving. It hit the door rim and was two inches from hitting me.” Continue reading

Law. Liberty. And License.

Do you know what today is?

With everyone “sheltering in place” it’s easy to lose track of both the days and the date.

Today, May 1st, might be remembered as the day for many when the “sheltering in place” restrictions expired in their state. However, if you access the National Calendar Day you will find some unusual and interesting celebrations in addition to our normal holidays.

Today is National Chocolate Parfait Day. National Mother Goose Day. National Loyalty Day. And National Principal’s Day. You can look them up to see what they mean. Continue reading

Are You Ready for a Mayor Pete Presidency?

We’re only two primaries into the 2020 Presidential race, but the field has already narrowed for the Democratic nominee. Elizabeth Warren is struggling. Joe Biden is fading. Bernie Sanders, to the chagrin of the party, is the current front runner. And Pete Buttigieg, the former Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is surging.

Have you noticed how the liberal new media seems to be pushing Mayor Pete, often comparing him to President Barack Obama? Continue reading

Jesus’ Answer To A Politically Polarized Nation

Charles Dickens’s depiction of 19th century Europe in his classic “Tale of Two Cities,” seems in some ways to describe the incredible times in which we live.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness…”

Our country enjoys unequaled prosperity, incredible opportunities, and according to a recent Gallup Poll, 90% of Americans are satisfied with their personal life. Yet, it seems more than ever, we are polarized politically socially, religiously, and morally. Continue reading

Prayer and U.S. Constitution

Alabama sheriff Nick Smith is in trouble. At least with some folks. In their eyes, he’s engaged in an egregious activity that should be censured.

“What has sheriff Smith done” you wonder. “How has he violated his oath of office?”

Recently in the face of two local tragedies, sheriff Smith has asked the community to pray. Continue reading

Why is Evil Rampant in our Country?

Following the horrific mass murders in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, politicians and pundits are asking the same questions, promoting familiar explanations, and making urgent demands that we’ve all heard before.

“One question no one is asking,” raised columnist Cal Thomas is “Why is evil rampant in our country?” Continue reading

When Nothing is Sacred, Everything is Profane

Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas are 1500 miles apart, but over the weekend became one in shock and sorrow, as a nation was once again stunned by two mass murders.

At least 31 were left dead and dozens more were injured, leaving pundits, talking heads, and average American citizens with the same old haunting questions. Why? What were the motives of the two young gunmen? And what can be done so this never happens again? Continue reading

A State of Emergency

President Trump has declared “A State of Emergency” on our Southern border in an effort to secure funding to build his promised border wall.

This declaration has further polarized Republicans and Democrats. Conservatives and Liberals. Pro-Trump and Non-Trump advocates. Of course, the media is having a field day with political pundits in their respective corners pontificating about the merits of this declaration or the lack thereof.

Predictably, many on social media are passionately sharing their views. Some with harsh and hateful language. Sadly some who profess allegiance to Christ have dimmed and diminished their light with vitriolic speech. Continue reading

An Ironic Absence of the Bible

Last week newly elected Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema took the oath of office but refused to be sworn in on the Bible. Instead, she placed her right hand on a book of laws that included the Arizona and United States Constitution.

“Kyrsten always gets sworn in on a Constitution simply because of her love for the Constitution,” the senator’s office said.

Hmm. Maybe. Continue reading

Great Verses of the Bible: 2Chronicles 7:14

Today is the 242nd birthday of the United States of America. For the first time in my life, I’m out of the country for the 4th, although just across the border in Ontario, Canada. But I don’t have to be “home” to know that America is hurting.

A recent Gallup poll revealed that the number of US citizens who consider themselves “extremely proud to be an American” has sunk to an 18 year low. In fact, for the first time, the number fell below 50%. Continue reading
