When We Rightly Regard One Another

This week we are attending the annual Florida College Lectures. And while we are profiting from the lessons, we are enjoying the fellowship and renewing our friendship with so many from bygone years.

In fact the Wednesday morning lectures, actually addressed the importance of our relationships with one another. As Bible Chair Jason Longstreth enunciated in the book the Wednesday lectures will be focused on “our fellowship in the gospel.” The theme, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel, will be “explored through the lens of humility, unity, relationships and correction.” Continue reading

Applications of a Life Worthy of the Gospel

I love the theme of 2023 Florida College Lectures, “A Life Worthy of the Gospel.” It’s personal. Practical. And powerfully penetrating.

As explained by Bible Chair, Jason Longstreth, in the Preface to the lecture book, the evening lectures are “designed to help us examine the priority, distinctiveness, and fullness of the gospel.”

The day time lectures emphasize a specific area of application. Yesterday, the focus was “our thoughts, preaching, prayer and daily life.” While we were unable to attend all of these lectures, here are a few highlights quoted from the manuscripts in the lecture book. Continue reading

Conduct Worthy of the Gospel

This week Norma Jean and I are attending the Florida College Lectures in Temple Terrace, Florida. It’s my 56th consecutive year to attend this annual event.

This year’s theme is “A Life Worthy of the Gospel.” It’s generally based on studies from the Macedonian epistles. And specifically Paul’s exhortation in Philippians 1:27 “Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ.”

Last night following 30 minutes of soul stirring, spirit lifting singing, Todd Chandler delivered a masterful and compelling keynote address entitled “Only Live Worthy of the Gospel: The Priority of the Gospel.” Continue reading

The Seed and Soil For Growth

Some time ago “Reader’s Digest” told the story about a company who mailed out some special advertising business post cards with a mustard seed glued to it with the following caption that went something like this:

“If you have faith as small as this mustard seed in our (product), you are guaranteed to get excellent results and be totally satisfied.” — Signed, The Management Continue reading

Feelings

A friend of mine, Catherine Fairchild from Jordan, Ontario, Canada, recently posted this piece by an unknown author about feelings.

“My feelings are not God. God is God. My feelings do not define truth. God’s Word defines truth. Continue reading

Living in a Scandalous Culture

“What’s scandalous these days?” Asked conservative columnist Cal Thomas in a recent article.

Although he was addressing some the shenanigans going in politics, his opening paragraph speaks to a spiritual challenge that has scriptural application today.

“In our relativistic age in which everyone has his or her own ‘truth’ and none is to be preferred over another so long as the individual feels good about it, why should anything be considered scandalous?” Continue reading

Luke 5:1-11

“Nothing makes a fish bigger than almost being caught,” quipped one fisherman.

Fishermen are known for their tall tales. Their exaggeration about the size of their catch. And, of course, the big one that got away.

However, can you imagine, Peter telling the story about the day Jesus went fishing with him, James and John? It may well have been the basis of a sermon years later. Continue reading

Heard Any Good News Lately?

For the past several days the news media has played and replayed the senseless, horrific, inhumane beating of a black man in Memphis by five black ex-cops, who have since been charged with second degree murder.

In addition to that sickening story we’ve heard about…

…the murder trial of a prominent South Carolina man accused of killing his wife and son.

…a California mass shooting.

…another California mass shooting. Continue reading

Know Yourself To Grow Yourself

Although probably apocryphal, there’s an old story about a flight delayed with a long line of disgruntled passengers waiting to be rebooked by a single gate attendant.

Impatiently, a business tycoon pushes his way to the front of the line demanding to be rebooked immediately. The agent smiled sweetly and assured him she was doing her best, but he would have to wait in line like everyone else.

After several failed attempts to get his way, the man pounded the desk and bellowed, “Do you have any idea who I am?” Continue reading
